Grain Access Planner

About the role

As a Grain Access Planner, you’ll play a pivotal role in managing and optimizing grain services on the V/Line rail network. Your mission is to maximize network capacity, meet projected demand growth, and ensure efficient grain movement. This is an initial 12-month contract position.

Key accountabilities include:

  • Strategic Planning: Collaborate with industry stakeholders to advise on service planning, especially in the months leading up to the critical two-week period when train paths are booked through the V/Line short-term planning team.
  • Network Optimization: Provide robust and timely advice to industry stakeholders on network capacity and optimal train pathing, considering restrictions caused by Big Build projects and routine maintenance.
  • Data Analysis: Collect and analyze data from grain companies to enhance network utilization and grain volumes.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Work closely with grain companies, rail operators, network operators, and government rail policy functions.
  • Performance Targets: Align with the objectives of the Grain Rail Improvement Plan (GRIP) to increase rail volumes to 2 million tonnes per annum by the end of the 2024 financial year.

About you

As an industry expert, you are confident in addressing queries from both internal and external stakeholder, ensuring credibility is maintained. You have excellent communication skills, and are able to thrive in a dynamic environment and adapt quickly to changing circumstances.  

Our ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • 15-20 years of experience in the rail/grain industry.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the Victorian rail network and its key limitations.
  • Proven ability to assess and manage rail network disruptions.
  • Familiarity with Victorian regional primary production.
  • Track record of maximising network utilization through strategic planning
  • Strong Capability to negotiate effectively with senior industry representatives.
  • Demonstrable proficiency in MS Excel for planning and problem-solving.
  • Demonstrated alignment to V/Line’s values of responsiveness, integrity, impartiality, accountability, respect, leadership and human rights.

Qualification

  • Tertiary Qualification in Engineering, Logistics/Supply Chain or other relevant disciplines is well regarded.
