This is an exceptional opportunity to make a very real contribution to the protection of Australia's unique wildlife and their habitat.

  • Fantastic opportunity to work within a leading conservation organisation.
  • Location, Hamelin Station Stay Manager.
  • $71,630 - $79,593 plus super (with opportunities for further growth).
  • Fixed term contract - 26th February 2024 to 31st October 2024.
  • Full time, 5 days per week, including weekend roster.
About us
For over 30 years we've supported and protected some of the most fragile ecosystems across the continent and seen the impact of our science-based approach. We keep our eyes on the horizon and focus firmly on long-term, landscape scale impact.
As a national, not-for-profit, we want to continue to expand the areas we protect and deepen the impact we have. We work in partnership with Traditional Owners, listening to and learning from the customs and cultures that came before us.
Together we can heal and protect the bush, now and into the future.
About the role
Hamelin Station is 202,644 ha and located on the southern base of the Peron Peninsula about 100 km southeast of Denham in the Shire of Shark Bay. Its western property boundary adjoins the Shark Bay World Heritage Area and approximately 40 km of Hamelin Pool frontage (Hamelin Pool Marine Nature Reserve). The Hamelin Pool stromatolites site is directly adjacent to western boundary of Hamelin Station.
Hamelin Station has a well-developed Station Stay that operates from April to mid-October. There are 30 unpowered caravan sites, and 8 rooms with bedding/linen provided. Hamelin Station Stay is recognised across Australia as an excellent example of a remote Station Stay conservation tourism enterprise. It is imperative that this reputation is maintained and built upon.
The Hamelin Station Stay Manager will oversee and manage the Hamelin Station Stay operations. This includes managing two Hospitality Assistant roles and working with these Assistants to clean and maintain all hospitality facilities as a Station Stay team, all bookings, payments and finance reconciliation, ensuring facilities within the Station Stay precinct are maintained to the highest standard, engaging with visitors, and ensuring all visitors, staff and volunteers working within the Station Stay precinct adhere to Bush Heritage health and safety requirements. Bush Heritage Volunteers will also occasionally be available to assist with Station Stay operations and maintenance.
The Station Stay staff team (Manager and Hospitality Assistants) will initiate and provide opportunities to engage guests with Bush Heritage Australia, and Hamelin Reserve conservation programs. To engage and inform Station Stays guests, the Station Stay team will arrange daily early-evening presentations for guests and at least one field activity each week. Visiting experts/professionals in science, education, training and land management conservation activities at Hamelin Reserve and the Shark Bay region can be invited to assist the Station Stay team with engaging Station Stay guest. The Station Stay team, including the Manager role, will be required to work five days in seven on a roster that has staggered start/finish times so the Station Stay has staff on duty between 8 am and 6:30 pm each day.
Free on-site accommodation is provided for the Station Stay Manager - there are bedrooms available in the Hamelin Reserve Homestead, with shared bathrooms, toilets and living/kitchen/dining areas. Hamelin Reserve staff, and other Station Stay team members will also reside in the Homestead building. The Manager is responsible for their own meals/food supplies in this remote location - food can be delivered from Geraldton via online shopping/regular courier services.
What you'll need to succeed:
  • Demonstrated experience in managing tourist or hospitality enterprises.
  • Demonstrated experience in community engagement or developing visitor experiences.
  • Demonstrated experience and a strong track record in customer service.
  • Commitment and passion for nature conservation and the objectives and values of Bush Heritage.
  • Experience living and working in remote/rural locations.
  • Demonstrated experience in health and safety risk assessment procedures and requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Computer literacy and proficiency to manage emails and on-line booking system.
  • Current first aid qualifications.
  • Current manual drivers' licence.
