Job description

Exciting role to spearhead the charge in aviation sustainability at Melbourne Airport, where your expertise will drive transformative change, setting new standards for environmental stewardship in Australia's bustling aviation industry.

Melbourne Airport is seeking a dynamic and experienced person to oversee our sustainability and environment initiatives as the Head of Sustainability and Environment. As one of Australia's busiest airports, we recognise the critical importance of minimising our environmental footprint and contributing positively to sustainability efforts. This role presents an exciting opportunity to drive meaningful change within our organisation and the broader aviation industry.

Key role responsibilities include:

  • Provide direction and management of APAC’s environmental management, sustainability and environmental, social and governance programs, policies and supporting processes.
  • Facilitate the business integrating a sustainability approach, over time, into all of APAC’s development projects and operating activities.
  • Ensure APAC meets its environmental and sustainability regulatory requirements and establish effective working relationships with commonwealth and state regulators.
  • Develop business cases and implement and operationally manage environmental and sustainability projects to achieve APAC’s environmental and sustainability goals and targets

Join Melbourne Airport's dedicated team and play a pivotal role in shaping a more sustainable future for aviation and the airport. If you are passionate about environmental stewardship and ready to make a meaningful impact, we invite you to apply for the position of Head of Sustainability and Environment.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Develop and Implement Sustainability Strategies: Guide the development and implementation of comprehensive sustainability strategies aligned with Melbourne Airport's goals and objectives. This includes identifying key areas for improvement, setting targets, and establishing initiatives to enhance environmental performance across all aspects of airport operations.
  • Environmental Compliance: Ensure compliance with all relevant environmental regulations, permits, and standards. Monitor changes in legislation and industry best practices to proactively address emerging environmental issues and minimise potential risks.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Cultivate strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including government agencies, airlines, tenants, and local communities. Collaborate with key partners to promote sustainable practices, address concerns, and foster a culture of Environmental stewardship
  • Sustainability Reporting and Performance Monitoring: Oversee the collection, analysis, and reporting of sustainability data to track performance against targets and benchmarks. Prepare regular reports for internal stakeholders, regulatory bodies, and industry associations to communicate progress and demonstrate accountability
  • Energy and Resource Management: Oversee initiatives to reduce energy consumption, water usage, and waste generation throughout the airport. Identify opportunities for efficiency improvements, renewable energy integration, and waste diversion strategies to minimise environmental impact and operational costs
  • Carbon Emissions Reduction: Lead efforts to mitigate carbon emissions from airport operations through the implementation of carbon reduction initiatives, carbon offset programs, and the adoption of cleaner technologies. Drive progress towards carbon neutrality targets and contribute to global climate action objectives
  • Employee Engagement and Training: Engage employees at all levels of the organisation on sustainability initiatives through education, training, and awareness campaigns. Foster a culture of Environmental responsibility and empower staff to contribute to sustainability goals in their respective roles
  • Team Leadership: Provide leadership and guidance to the team, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement. Build and maintain team engagement through open communication and sharing of information and ideas to foster a sense of team unity and common purpose and role modelling of the APAC corporate values.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in environmental science, sustainability, engineering, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in leading sustainability and environmental programs within a complex organisation.
  • Strong understanding of Environmental regulations, standards, and reporting frameworks including Commonwealth and State environmental and sustainability legislation, approval processes and precedents.
  • Demonstrated track record of driving measurable improvement in environmental performance, resource efficiency, and carbon management.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively engage stakeholders at all levels and influence decision-making.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to develop and implement long-term sustainability strategies aligned with business objectives.
  • Results-oriented mindset with a focus on innovation, continuous improvement, and achieving tangible outcomes.
