About the role

The Head of Learning Area - Global Studies will coordinate an integrated, cross-disciplinary Learning Area designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in a rapidly changing world. Underpinned by the Humanities & Social Sciences (HASS) and Languages curriculum, the Global StudiesLearning Area will explore cultures, history, civics, politics, law, economics, business and languages – promoting cultural awareness, critical thinking and diverse perspectives.

The Head of Learning AreaGlobal Studies will foster meaningful connections between staff, students, parents/guardians and the wider school community to ensure a pathway to success for every student. Using their strong HASS or Languages curriculum knowledge, the successful applicant will lead staff to meet individual student needs through data-driven decision making, staff coaching and mentoring, implementing continued reflective practice and supporting the consistent application of Classroom Management Strategies (CMS). 

The Senior Leadership Team at Piara Waters SHS consists of the Principal, Deputy Principals, Manager Corporate Services, curriculum leaders (Heads of Learning Area), pathway managers (Program Coordinators) and in the future, those responsible for the management of key specialist programs (Directors).  The Head of Learning AreaGlobal Studies will join this team of highly competent, enthusiastic staff who are passionate about staying at the forefront of educational innovation. They will be committed to developing and implementing the school strategic plan, sustaining the school’s pedagogical approach, supporting and building staff capacity as well as promoting a culture of ongoing deep learning. 

The Head of Learning AreaGlobal Studies is also responsible for the day-to-day management of the HASS and Languages curriculum area, and as such experience in developing rigorous teaching and learning programs, establishing, and evaluating senior school pathways, completing regular data analysis, meeting School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA) compliance requirements, ongoing staff performance development.

All staff at Piara Waters SHS work collaboratively with the broader school community to create the conditions where high expectations and high-quality teaching thrive.  As Head of Learning Area, the successful applicant will contribute to the development of positive social relationships and promote the use of flexible learning spaces within our learning environment to personalise learning for students as we create an environment which fosters curiosity, enhances creativity and engenders critical thinking.

About the school

Piara Waters Senior High School is an inclusive, state-of-the-art educational institution located approximately 25 kilometres south of Perth. Situated in the beautifully landscaped suburb of Piara Waters, staff at Piara Waters SHS are dedicated to supporting a vibrant, multicultural community and ensuring that every student achieves at their highest level. The school commenced with Year 7 students in 2023, and will add each year to its growing cohort, until it reaches Year 12 in 2028.

Our students are living in a rapidly changing world and need the skills to adapt and change with it. A diverse curriculum offering traditional and innovative programs of study, combined with innovative approaches to learning and teaching, will equip students to develop the skills they need to confront, adapt and thrive in a competitive and dynamic global community. This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position. 

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:

  • Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings;
  • High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes;
  • Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs);
  • Capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources.

Eligibility and training requirements

 Employees will be required to:

  • provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
  • consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment
  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
  • complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter;
  • complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement; and
  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
