Job description

Purpose 

As the Arabana Head Ranger you are responsible to lead and manage all aspects of the Ranger program, delivering outcomes in line with the Strategic Plan and Arabana Healthy Country Program (AHCP).  You will develop sound operational plans and budgets which will have strong adherence. As a leader within our community, you will build and hold strong stakeholder relationships to support achievement of our objectives. 

Key Accountabilities and Skills

Management and execution of all elements of the Strategic Plan and AHCP.

  • Development and execution to annual operation plans and budgets
  • Review and refresh the Strategic Plan and AHCP as required or directed
  • Seek and manage all funding sources that support the program
  • Complete all reporting obligations in a timely manner, including but not limited to financial reporting, board reporting, annual reporting, grant reporting 
  • Manage AAC assets, upkeep record management and maintenance across all Arabana Ranger group’s vehicles, equipment, IT resources, infrastructure and other Arabana assets.
  • Maintain adherence to policies and procedures and ensure staff adherence. Develop and support the ongoing development of policies and procedures as required

Lead the Arabana Ranger team 

  • Manage and lead the day-to-day operations. 
    • Field work on Country, including Trip planning, ensuring health and safety requirements are met in accordance with policies and procedures, Supervision and active participation across all elements of the trip 
    • Back at Base operations.  Provide meaningful work at Back to Base locations.
  • Team development and supervision 
    • Complete regular 1on1 supervision meetings with each Ranger, provide regular feedback and coaching.  Ensure each Ranger has an ongoing development plan.
    • Complete half yearly and annual performance reviews across the team.
    • Identify training needs for Arabana Rangers and participate in professional development programs appropriate for building effective workforce participation and competency 

Ensure compliance to Safety obligations

  • Build a safety-first culture, ensure the whole team has strong adherence to safety protocols and procedures. 
  • Complete robust risk assessments for all activities and ensure trip plans address all safety risks 

Stakeholder management 

  • Assist Rangers to liaise with Senior Arabana Traditional Owners, other Aboriginal organisations, local government authorities, government departments, industry groups, and key regional stakeholders on matters relevant to indigenous land management, and the requirements of the Arabana Ranger Program.
  • Participate in representative forums and other initiatives and opportunities to showcase the group’s achievements.

Other responsibilities 

  • Work collaboratively with the wider AAC team and maintain strong relationship with the Board of Directors including attending Board meetings from time to time. 
  • All other duties where applicable

Desirable Qualifications and Experience 

  • Working with Vulnerable person-related employment check, or willingness to be registered. 
  • Experience with operating a 4WD vehicle in remote locations, including the operation of UHF/VHF radio equipment. 
  • Knowledge and safe use of power tools, light machinery, chemicals etc. in line with Occupational Health & Safety standards. 
  • Current Class A&B Firearms License, and evidence of competent use. 
  • Willingness to undertake further training relevant to the role.
