Overview
An excellent position exists for a Head Stockman to lead a stock team on a largescale mixed sheep and cattle enterprise near Campbell Town, Tasmania. The company owns and operates nearly 6000ha at Campbell Town, and a further 900ha approximately 60kms to the northwest. Almost half the country is improved pasture, with 1100ha under centre pivots. The remainder is native pasture and rugged hilly bush.
In recent years, the livestock carrying capacity has consisted of 4500 Merino breeding ewes, 4500 prime lamb breeding ewes, and 750 Angus breeding cows plus followers.
Working closely with the Farm Manager and the owner, the successful applicant will require:
- A team of good dogs for mustering, paddock work and yardwork
- Ability to accurately count livestock
- Ability to ride a horse for mustering the rougher hill country
- Preparedness to crutch (dag) sheep and undertake all other animal husbandry duties, including lamb marking
- Fencing skills and some understanding of general upkeep of road and water infrastructure
- Ability to operate and perform some necessary mechanical maintenance on farm machinery: Tractors, front-end loaders, telehandlers, utes, ATVs etc. Machinery operations primarily for making big square bale hay, some permanent pasture spraying and improvements and stock feeding.
- A passion for the industry, livestock and area, and a natural positive attitude to your work and the people around you. A keeness to teach and upskill others within the team, by leading by example.
A competitive remuneration package in the expected range of 70-90k is on offer for the successful applicant, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Well presented and renovated house on farm, within 7kms of Campbell Town.
