The Opportunity -
Novaskill is currently partnered with Ballina Shire Council to offer a Horticulture Traineeship, including training & ongoing mentoring from a welcoming team there to support your career building.
This is an opportunity to learn all aspects of maintaining vegetation, gardens, and recreational facilities throughout the Ballina Shire, including the operation and maintenance of equipment and tools. We are looking for a motivated, committed, and reliable person who is wanting to gain practical on the job experience, whilst receiving training and a Certificate II in Horticulture.
This fulltime trainee position is an opportunity for a motivated individual who has a passion for all things outdoors.
Learnings -
- Assist in duties associated with horticultural maintenance of the shire’s parks, gardens, and recreational areas. Including mowing and edging.
- Perform day-to-day tasks, including planting, pruning, weeding, and watering.
- Assist in undertaking routine chemical spraying to maintain parks and gardens.
- Assist in planting and maintaining appropriate vegetation.
- Work collaboratively within the team to ensure all WHS practices are adhered to.
- Working in an all-inclusive culture where all people are valued, and differences respected.
- Display a positive attitude and a willingness to develop skills and knowledge relating to the Horticulture industry.
Traineeship Suitability Recommendations –
To succeed in this apprenticeship, we recommend you have –
- Good hand-eye coordination and the ability to use hand tools
- An interest in the horticulture industry
- A basic level of physical fitness
- Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) at a Year 10 high school level
- Ability to work well as part of a team
- Commitment to safety
Selection Criteria
- Demonstrated interest and passion for the industry.
- Year 10 High School Certificate or equivalent as a minimum.
- Effective communication skills both oral and written.
- Construction Industry Induction ticket (White Card) or ability to obtain.
- Drivers’ licence is desirable, with the potential to operate a manual transmission.
- Proven ability to work as part of a team.
- Demonstrated ability to perform general labouring and maintenance duties.
- Behaviour that positively displays values of respect, inclusivity, and safety.
- Ability to undertake a Pre-Employment medical.
- A commitment to the principles and practices of work health and safety.
- Presents a positive image of the council to the public.
