Job description

About BDO
At BDO, we embrace true flexibility. Although we encourage our staff to spend some of their days working from their local BDO office, our IT systems mean that we can support applications from candidates who also need to work from home.
We encourage applicants who are seeking to return to work (or operate) in a more flexible manner to apply.
Due to one of our team going on parental leave, BDO’s in-house legal team is looking to recruit an experienced lawyer to replace them on a twelve (12) month maximum-term contract. We are looking for a commercial lawyer to provide practical advice and work autonomously as well as part of the broader legal team.
Say goodbye to billable hours and hello to a true-work life balance!
How your impact will be felt
Working with the General Counsel, Head of Legal and the legal team, you will utilise your experience in commercial and corporate law to provide legal and strategic advice to your colleagues in the business.
You'll be involved in a variety of interesting and challenging matters and your responsibilities will include:

  • Advising on and drafting commercial and client contracts (both external terms and BDO terms).
  • Advising on other legal agreements including non-disclosure agreements, procurement contracts
  • Providing ad hoc legal advice across the firm
  • Assisting with legal, regulatory and compliance matters
  • Advising on employment law matters
  • Assisting with investigations, disputes and litigation (including briefing external lawyers where required)
  • Supporting the firm’s legal frameworks (e.g. review of policies & procedures, providing legal training)
  • Supporting special projects and initiatives across the firm
  • Development of legal knowledge resources and streamlining work processes in the legal team
What you’ll need to succeed
Prior in-house experience is not a pre-requisite to be successful in this role. More so, you enjoy working in a supportive environment where you will utilise your legal and commercial acumen skills.
Combined with the following:
  • Bachelor of Laws and admitted to practice in an Australian State or Territory
  • Minimum 6 years PQE
  • Prior commercial and corporate experience
  • Experience in applying those skills to achieve practical solutions for the business, appropriately balancing legal risk with commercial objectives
  • A mindset of innovation and change: the ability to develop ideas, challenging the status quo as appropriate, and consulting with others to produce viable commercial solutions
  • Well-developed interpersonal and communication skill with the ability to communicate effectively, gaining the trust and confidence of colleagues across different levels and locations
  • Agile and adaptable, able to manage competing priorities and capable of managing legal matters of all sizes and levels of complexity.
  • Employment law, litigation and regulatory (e.g. ASIC) experience will be highly considered, although not essential
What we will offer you
BDO offers professional development, collaborative culture, workplace flexibility, global career growth opportunities and an industry-competitive salary package.
Some of the benefits our employees enjoy include:
  • Health & Wellbeing initiatives - We offer a range of health-focused services and benefits to support you to reach your peak potential in all aspects of life.

  • Lifestyle & Community – team bonding & social events, free daily breakfast, ‘dress for your day’

We are committed to building your technical, advisory, leadership, and management skills, and balance work with promoting health, wellbeing, workplace giving and social activities. At BDO, we want you to enjoy what you do and the community of colleagues and clients you work with.
As a firm, we embrace an inclusive culture and value the difference and unique perspective of every individual. We are proud to be named an Inclusive Employer by Diversity Council Australia (DCA).
