About the Organisation 

Aurukun Shire Council is an Indigenous community located on the western side of Cape York Peninsula, bordered by rivers and rich in cultural heritage. With a population of about 1,400, the Shire provides a variety of essential services including aged and child care, community policing, waste management, and more. The council operates our of both the Cairns Support Office and the Aurukun office.

Our overarching vision is to foster community development, champion well-being, and position Aurukun as a hub of opportunity and advancement. In line with this, we are collaborating with various government stakeholders, including Ministerial and Government Champions, to roll out a forward-thinking 4-point plan for Aurukun's future.

About the Position

Reporting to the Director of Corporate Services, the Interim Finance Manager will be responsible for delivering all financial and accounting services for the Council. Key responsibilities include long-term financial planning, annual budgeting, financial reporting, and management accounting. You will oversee the Cairns Support Office team and ensure effective collaboration with the Aurukun office. This role requires immediate impact, especially with budget preparations underway, and the budget meeting scheduled for the end of July. Proficiency in Synergy finance software is essential.

About You

We are looking for a proactive individual with a strong work ethic who can provide sound financial management and advice while striving for continuous improvement. You should enjoy leading a team and have a passion for working within Indigenous communities. 

Key qualifications include:

  • Minimum three years' experience in financial management, preferably within local government or the public sector.
  • Degree qualifications in Accounting with CA/CPA certification.
  • Proven ability to manage long-term financial planning, budgeting, and annual financial reporting.
  • Strong leadership skills to guide and motivate a team.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team to achieve positive outcomes.
  • Experience with Synergy finance software.
  • Qld Local Government experience is highly desirable.
