About the role
Mater Language Services currently has a rewarding opportunity for an experienced Somali Interpreter to join their team in a permanent and part-time (22.8 hours a week) position.
As a Somali Interpreter you will provide interpreting services via on-site, telephone and telehealth modes within Mater in Somali as credentialed by National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI).
This position requires sophisticated sensitivity to, knowledge and understanding of issues impacting people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds seeking access to safe, high quality and compassionate healthcare services.
Salary range: $42.05 - $46.33 (MCAS4) per hour plus superannuation
What you'll be doing
Key duties will include:
  • Coordinate and provide on-site, telephone and telehealth medical interpreting services across Mater sites
  • Provide intercultural mediation for staff and the African community
  • Participate in Mater presentations relating to cultural diversity as part of a pre-approved training program coordinated by the Cultural Diversity Unit
  • Participate in quality improvement activities as required
  • Maintain data and participate in research as required by the Cultural Diversity Unit
About you
To be successful in this role you will possess the following skills, experience and qualifications:
  • NAATI (National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters) Certified Interpreter in Somali and English - Certified Level preferred
  • Tertiary qualifications in interpreting and translating is desirable
  • Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology and experience working within a multidisciplinary healthcare setting
  • Demonstrated Information Technology skills, and competence especially with interpreting booking systems
