Job description

ICTV’s Community News

Indigenous Community Television (ICTV) Community News is a look-live news, special interest, and current affairs program presented in various Australian Indigenous languages.

Broadcast monthly, each episode of Community News runs for approximately 30-45 minutes, with a language-speaking anchor newsreader presenting in Western Arrernte, Warlpiri, or Pitjantjatjara. A version of the Community News in accessible English is also produced.

The Community News Journalist plays an important role in the development and production of bulletins by researching stories and working as part of the ICTV News team, as well as supporting Senior language workers and presenters in the delivery of the news.

Our vision is to strengthen culture and community through the power of moving image, and our purpose is to improve the lives of Indigenous Australians, especially those who live in remote areas, through access to cultural and community video content.

Content for the Community News programs includes national and local community news, human interest stories, sports and weather. The overall features for the stories and segments must be of interest to the ICTV audience, include issues impacting remote communities, and all stories must have an Indigenous focus.

While this position has the potential to be full-time for the ideal candidate, we are open to negotiating part-time hours.

This role is located at ICTV’s office in Mparntwe/Alice Springs and requires occasional travel to remote communities.

Proficiency in a Central Australian Indigenous language is highly desirable and will be considered a valuable asset in this role, but is not essential.

DUTIES WILL INCLUDE

  • Researching and writing news stories with specific interest to audiences in remote Indigenous communities under the editorial direction of the News Director.
  • Liaising with contributor organisations and individuals regarding the submission of news content.
  • Filming on location with the ICTV crew.
  • Supporting training for casual remote reporters.
  • Taking on other crew roles as required during the live production of the program.
  • Working with social media staff to create posts to accompany the news.
  • Other duties as requested by ICTV General Manager.

REQUIREMENTS OF THE ROLE

Ethical standards: At ICTV, we demand our team adhere to the highest ethical guidelines and standards, including accuracy, fairness, and transparency. Integrity and a commitment to truth-telling are essential.
