ASPI is one of the most authoritative and widely quoted contributors to public discussion of strategic policy issues in the Indo-Pacific region and a recognised Australian voice in international discussion on strategic, national security, cyber, critical technology, climate and foreign interference issues. The Sydney Dialogue, hosted by ASPI, is the premier annual policy summit for critical, emerging, cyber and space technologies, and where leaders in government, the tech sector and civil society can anticipate and respond to the strategic risks and opportunities presented by increasingly complex technological advances. ASPI aims, through its website, publications, events, media activities, The Strategist and podcast (Policy, Guns & Money), to be innovative, accurate and well-informed and to broaden public knowledge about the critical strategic choices our country will face over the coming years. The institute’s work helps to foster strategic expertise in Australia through dialogue, research and its contribution to public debate. ASPI strives to provide a strong focus and constructive commentary on the practical choices and issues which confront Australia’s strategic policy decisions, and this is reflected in ASPI's core values of collegiality, originality and innovation, quality and excellence, and independence.
ASPI was established by the Australian Government in 2001. It is partially funded by the Department of Defence and receives funding from a variety of sources including sponsorship, research and project support from governments, industry and civil society. In 2022, ASPI opened an office in Washington DC to provide authoritative Australian perspectives on global strategic issues including the challenges and opportunities facing the Alliance, AUKUS and the Indo-Pacific.
