About The Gordon and Jessie Gilmour Leukaemia Research Laboratory:
The Gordon and Jessie Gilmour Leukaemia Research Laboratory, headed by clinician scientist Professor Steven Lane, uses sophisticated in vivo models to investigate the molecular drivers of disease in myeloid proliferative neoplasms (MPN) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML), and how they impact treatment responses. QIMR Berghofer fosters research excellence with first-class facilities providing cutting-edge technology and support.
Role/Responsibilities:
In this role you will operate under supervision of Dr Megan Bywater and Professor Steven Lane to independently drive projects involving:
* Establishing and maintaining murine models of MDS and leukaemia
* In vivo drug trials using demethylating, cytotoxic and targeted agents
* Develop and validate/ perform existing assays pertaining to flow cytometry/ molecular biology and monitoring of response
* Perform duties as an independent, self-motivated scientist, as expected from a post-doctoral Research Officer, with minimum requirement for day-to-day supervision.
* Assist in the preparation of safety, ethics and other regulatory applications and compliance reporting relevant to the projects
* Assist in the supervision of research assistants within the laboratory
* Lead and promote compliance with ethical and professional work practices including the Workplace Health and Safety Act, related legislative requirements and the Institute's OH&S policies and procedures
About you:
We are seeking an applicant who has the following to be successful in this position:
* PhD that includes training in research related to cancer biology, cell biology and/or molecular biology. In particular, research training in haematopoietic stem cell biology is required.
* Sound knowledge of laboratory-based techniques and procedures in laboratory research in the field of cancer and molecular biology, including cloning.
* Specific experience and track record in flow cytometry and sorting, molecular and cell biology relevant to haematopoietic stem cell biology and erythroid differentiation
* A publication record demonstrating peer-reviewed publications
* Good problem-solving skills
* Good record-keeping skills
* Good written and oral communication skills, including ability to motivate and communicate research findings to scientists, clinicians and lay community.
* Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with scientists, clinicians and support staff
The following skills will also be highly regarded:
* Experience in relevant animal models, including imaging
* Experience in collaborative research across institutions, including with hospital and industry
* Familiarity with the Australian code for the responsible conduct of research.
Remuneration: Salary range is $92,403 to $99,142 p.a. depending on experience and qualifications plus super and salary packaging. This is a full-time appointment for 2 years.
