Job description

The Kitchen Specialist plans menus that can be cooked by the children, based on foods that have been grown and harvested in the garden. On taking up the position the Kitchen Specialist will undertake the following tasks. 

· Develop a harvest timetable. 

· Facilitate cooking classes with the aid of the classroom teacher assisting with behavioural issues Communicate effectively with teaching staff and demonstrate cooking lessons to classes. 

  • Integrate learning in the kitchen with learning in the garden.
  • Plan the weekly menu, incorporating seasonal garden produce, and reinforce key techniques.
  • Pre-prepare elements of the menu if necessary.

· Gather or prepare recipes in a format suitable for children to understand and arrange copies for all classes. 

· Shop for extra ingredients within budget guidelines.

· Liaise with the school’s leadership team to coordinate and support kitchen/garden volunteers. 

· Plan fortnightly garden classes, ensuring they are applicable to all participating age groups. This involves preparing up to five activities per class, creating a syllabus and preparing materials. 

· Facilitate garden classes with the aid of the classroom teacher assisting with behavioural issues. 

· Involve classroom teachers and students in the development of the syllabus through formal and informal discussions. 

· Plan the planting of the vegetable garden and involve the students in the process. 

· Plan any development of the vegetable garden infrastructure – incorporating the pre-existing vision – and involve the school community in the process. 

· A General Assistant is employed three days a week who will assist in preparations for gardening classes.

  • be passionate and have experience supporting primary students with a diverse range of needs.

  • possess the skills and abilities necessary to engage and empower students with a rich and rewarding Stephanie Alexander Kitchen experience. 
  • Support and embrace a positive collegial, team-based approach to all students’ learning.   
  • Experience in cooking and gardening.
  1. The successful candidate will: 
  • demonstrate the development of positive partnerships with parents and the wider community. 
  • have experience working with primary children. 
  • possess a Certificate III or IV in Education Support or equivalent qualifications and or experience. 
  • have a current Working with Children Check and a National Police Record Check.
