Based in Sydney, Broadway campus

ABOUT THE ROLE   

This position works in collaboration with Academic and Professional colleagues to provide effective and efficient laboratory support for the School of Health Sciences on the Sydney campus. This currently includes Biomedical Sciences and Occupational Therapy.  

The position reports to the Laboratory Manager and will assist with the maintenance of policies, procedures and forms governing the operations of the teaching facilities for practical classes. 

 Key Responsibilities 

  • Provide technical operations support for teaching and promotional activities within the School of Health Sciences. Where required, demonstrate technical instructions on the safe and correct operating techniques of relevant equipment, and assist academics and/or students.
  • Establish and maintain detailed laboratory resource statements and preparation notes, as well as ensuring that laboratories are prepared for school activities.
  • Advise and assist Academic and Research staff and Higher Degree Research (HDR) students with equipment requirements.
  • Liaise with external agencies and suppliers to procure the relevant materials and equipment by utilising the university financial system.
  • Actively contribute to the improvement of laboratories.
  • Assist with the supervision of technical projects for small groups of students, dissertation projects and small workshop classes.
  • Manage and perform regular calibration and maintenance on relevant equipment ensuring it is functional and safe to use.
  • Organise with internal and external agencies to service specialised equipment.
  • Actively contribute to the planning and timetabling of laboratory programs in the School.
  • Establish and maintain safety documentation such as risk assessments, safety audits and standard operating procedures for laboratory and field activities.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant legislation and University policies and procedures, including equity, health and safety and exhibit good practice in relation to same.
  • Comply with University policies and procedures in all aspects of their work and conduct.

ABOUT YOU 

  • Completion of a degree without subsequent relevant work experience, or completion of an advanced diploma qualification and at least 1 years subsequent relevant work experience, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
  • Demonstrated laboratory experience, preferably in the tertiary or higher education sectors.
  • Demonstrated skills in the demonstration and use of laboratory equipment in a learning and teaching environment.
  • Excellent operational, organisational and administrative skills including the ability to manage multiple competing priorities.
  • High level competency in the use of various software packages including Microsoft Office Suite, student administration systems and the ability to learn and implement new systems
  • Proven track record of preparing high quality documentation with excellent accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Proven understanding of Work Health and Safety regulations and the ability to ensure that laboratories are compliant and operate safely and effectively.
