Job description

The Opportunity
The Airway Epithelial Research Team at the Telethon Kids Institute is investigating the role of the epithelium in the development of airway diseases including preschool wheezing, childhood asthma, cystic fibrosis and others.
Understanding the importance of the regulatory mechanisms involved in each of these disease processes is essential if effective prevention and therapeutic strategies are to be developed.

This multi-disciplinary research team is now looking to appoint two Research Assistants to support experiments involving cell cultures (mammalian and microbiological), cohort sampling and processing preclinical in vivo models and downstream laboratory procedures.

The Role
Closely working with an experienced team around you on our Therapeutic Phage or novel Drug Development Programs, this role would require you to perform various tasks, such as microbiological or animal experiments. In addition, this role will conduct cell culture experiments as required, perform downstream laboratory assays and assist with diligent recordkeeping and data analysis for grant and manuscript submissions.

Your responsibilities will include:
  • Assisting with data entry into LabArchives and FreezerPro software at Telethon Kids Institute
  • Purchasing of lab consumables
  • When not required in lab, assisting with office-related tasks to supplement research team
  • Microbiological tasks include media preparation, bacteria, Phage isolation purification, propagation
  • Cell culture establishment and maintenance, either mammalian or microbiological cultures
  • Preclinical in vivo model studies assessing drug efficacy to enhance epithelial repair
  • Performing downstream assays with cell culture and tissue samples, such as RNA/DNA extractions, ELISA, and immunohistochemistry
Based within our modern laboratory facilities, these full-time positions will be offered for 12 months initially.

About You
If you are seeking to gain hands-on experience in the lab and have an interest in airway diseases, then we want to hear from you!

To be successful in this role, you will have demonstrated experience in the following:
  • Excellent team working skills as well as ability to work using your own initiative
  • High level attention to detail
  • Experience liaising with a number of team members
  • High level of interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Previous laboratory experience including microbiology, sterile technique, animal handling and downstream assays is highly desirable but not essential for this role.
We are driving inclusion and diversity as part of the way we work and embrace the diverse career and life experiences of our staff. If you meet a number of the requirements (and not all), we encourage you to submit your application. We also encourage you to address any career disruptions (if applicable) you may have had in your cover letter.

Our aim is to create a workplace where people are respected and encouraged to fulfil their potential. We encourage a workforce that is innovative, eager to acquire knowledge and enhance skills; we embrace all employee differences and foster a culture that supports diversity and inclusion.

We value our people and in return, you will be rewarded with a competitive remuneration package and the opportunity to be part of a long-standing organisation.
