About the Position

ALS Coal Technology is seeking a Laboratory Supervisor in a Full -Time capacity to manage, co-ordinate and control all laboratory activities within the Met Coal Centre. The Laboratory Supervisor will ensure all work practices are carried out in accordance with quality standards as well as the company's safety policy.

This role will require you to manage a team and display appropriate leadership behaviour, along with assist in building a positive organisational culture through active encouragement and participation.

At Coal Technology our focus is on the end-use utilisation of metallurgical and thermal coals. This role will solely focus on the evaluation of metallurgical coals for steelmaking. The role will be based at our Riverview facility which operates Monday to Friday, 6am - 2pm and the primary focus of the role will be to manage the day-to-day operations of the Carbonisation team.

The site operates both 450 kg pilot scale coke ovens, along with bench scale coke ovens which produce coke that is assessed for steelmaking performance.

In this role you will have functional working relationships with the managers, reporting staff and technicians.

Position Synopsis

Reporting to the Operations Manager, the position responsibilities and requirements include but are not limited to:

  • Ensure technical integrity of all coal and associated analytical data produced by the Carbonisation team.
  • Ensure implementation and compliance with the company's quality procedures, calibration methods and associated standards.
  • Scheduling the day-to-day workload of the Carbonisation team to meet customer targets.
  • Lead and mentor your team to ensure continuous improvement.
  • Lead the development and training of new and existing team members, ensuring any skills gaps are identified and managed.
  • Provide technical support and issue job instructions to staff.
  • Track monthly revenue forecasts to ensure revenue targets are achieved.
  • Ensure efficient, productive, accurate & timely completion of maintenance and calibration activities utilising the site database.
  • Troubleshoot equipment and systems to highlight potential problems and consult with the Operations Manager before they occur & offer resolution strategies.
  • Organise external maintenance and calibration services.
  • Complete spreadsheets to track repairs, use Microsoft Office skills to keep track of inventory and order supplies or materials.
  • Manage HSE standards, and ensure equipment is safely operated.
  • Resolve employee issues, address disciplinary and/or performance problems immediately in accordance with ALS policies and procedures.

Essential Skills, Experience & Knowledge

The ideal candidate will have:

A minimum 2 years experience in managing a team.

  • Strong management communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence as required.
  • Experience in coal quality, coal mining and/or end-use utlisation industries.
  • Effective written communication skills for liaison with clients, management and co-workers.
  • Demonstrated ability to maximise output and customer focus.
  • Comprehensive computer/software skills particularly in Microsoft Office.
  • Possess a valid driver's licence.
