The Client
With an office in Cairns, our client is a registered Native Title Body Corporate holding interests for first nations people located in Cape York Peninsula. These interests include connections for a large expanse of land including mainland, coastal and offshore islands in addition to sea country within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and Coral Sea. The Opportunity
This position is responsible for leading and managing a team of Traditional Land Custodians (Rangers) and coordinating the operational implementation of the relevant Healthy Country and Indigenous Protected Area Plans. The Custodian team will be responsible for undertaking our clients cultural and environmental management activities detailed in these plans. These include:
  • Cultural heritage
  • Weed management
  • Pest and feral animal control
  • Fire Management
  • Scientific surveys/monitoring
  • Junior ranger activities
  • Fencing
  • Track and general maintenance activities
The Land Custodian Coordinator working with the Senior Land Custodian will be responsible for ensuring activities are undertaken respecting first nation peoples Kincha (Lore) and in-line with agreed workplans.
In this role, you will be responsible for leading and managing the Ranger base and the team of Rangers based on site in north eastern Cape York Peninsula. Whilst this role is based in Cairns, the successful applicant will be required to travel regularly to the base to support operations.
About You
To be considered for this role, you will require:
  • Knowledge and practical operational experience in Aboriginal ranger caring for country management principles and practices in remote locations including knowledge of Traditional Owner country and culture or the ability to acquire that knowledge.
  • Demonstrated project leadership, management and organisational skills, including ability to write work plans, manage budgets, grant contracts, reporting and consultation processes.
  • The ability to manage and develop an onsite Land Custodian (Ranger) work team including the ability to lead and support others in the team and deliver agreed work plans.
  • Good oral and written communication skills in a Microsoft environment able to work constructively with Elders, Traditional Owners and a range of government and non-government partners.
  • A demonstrated ability to work as part of a team operating within the policies and procedures of our client’s organisational objectives.
  • Ability to develop and maintain networks with Traditional Owners, key partner agencies and stakeholders and act as a key liaison point for Traditional Owners and partners exhibiting exceptional communication skills, information processing and summary reporting.
  • High level of written and oral communication skills, such as ability to produce reports and deliver presentations.
  • Experience and proven capability to work in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • An understanding of historical and current issues faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities, particularly in northern Australia and the Torres Strait and the ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Traditional Owners and their Elders.
Mandatory Requirements:
  • Manual driver’s licence.
  • Eligible to successfully apply for a Blue Card for Working with Children.
Highly Desirable:
  • Previous experience collaborating with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and their leaders while honouring traditional culture, values, and business practices.
  • Relevant ranger qualifications and or experience including certificates in conservation and land management would be advantageous.
