Purpose

Reporting to the Director for Litigation and Workplace Relations, the Workplace Relations Lawyer delivers quality legal services and advice aligned with Nevett Ford’s performance standards and values within the practice area. This involves performing a general range of duties including providing legal consultation to clients, drawing and drafting of documents, preparation of applications and submissions for court and tribunals and appearing for clients representing their interests in matters.

The Workplace Relations Lawyer holds legal qualifications and has been admitted as a practicing lawyer with experience in Workplace Relations, Employment Law and Litigation Law.

Our offices are in the stunning Rialto corporate office towers in Melbourne’s CBD with thoughtful amenities such as cafes, a gym and End-of-Trip shower and locker facilities. Nevett Ford also offers 2 days per week work-from-home arrangements.

Key Capabilities, Qualifications and Experience

  • Admitted as a Lawyer in Victoria, with at least 5 years’ practical legal work experience in Workplace Relations Law.
  • Strong knowledge of Common Law practice and relevant legislation applicable to legal specialist area.
  • Experience in litigation law is desirable
  • Self-motivated with a demonstrated ability to manage and prioritise workload effectively.
  • Strong research and computer skills.
  • A demonstrated ability to handle time-pressured and confronting cases.
  • Advanced communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with an ability to build and maintain strong client and internal relationships.
  • Building strong relationships and have an appreciation and respect for a high standard of service and financial excellence.
  • Strong verbal, written and interpersonal skills with the ability to provide clear, concise, and accurate documentation.
  • Proficient MS Office and computer skills.
  • Experience with the Lexis Nexis Affinity practice management software (desirable).

Principle Accountabilities

  • Providing general as well as more complex advice and guidance on Workplace Relations law matters, including but not limited to navigating workplace investigations, negotiating the terms of employment contracts through to representation in State and Federal Courts systems.
  • Delivery of high quality, timely and cost-effective legal services to ensure enquiries and outcomes are delivered within the agreed to timeframes to exceed client expectations.
  • Preparing accurate and concise memoranda on legal issues/client cases arising out of prosecution files, including providing legal advice to external stakeholders within agreed time limits.
  • Actively build rapport with clients through the understanding and identification of client needs, providing options and expert advice.
  • Effectively complete legal research and gather relevant information to avoid assumptions on matters to ensure high quality advice and insights are provided.
  • Manage allocated files to comply with operating and legal case management standards, including meeting set targets and providing monthly reports to the Head of Department and/or Director.
  • Ensure that all documentation is filed and served within expected time frames to uphold data/information integrity.
  • Delivery of high quality, timely and cost-effective legal services to ensure enquiries and outcomes are delivered within the agreed to timeframes to meet and exceed client expectations.
  • Communicate with the team weekly/monthly on objectives, status of matters, and other work-related matters/projects.
  • Pursue resolution of individual allocated cases in a proactive manner in accordance with the Head of Department’s expectations, keeping all relevant stakeholders informed.
  • Converting initial enquiries from high potential client prospects into a file opening.
