Job description

Hester Hornbrook Academy is a Special Assistance School which provides flexible education and learning options, including VETiS (Vocational Education and Training in Schools), VPC (Victorian Pathways Certificate), VM (VCE Vocational Major), VCE and an extend program offering a variety of elective subjects. Recognising that mainstream education is not suitable for all young people, Hester Hornbrook Academy programs are driven by the personal pursuits of students. 

Their HOPE – Healing Orientated Program of Education informs our Practice model which ensures the integration of academic intervention and growth with wellbeing and life skills. Teachers, Youth Workers, and Education Support Officers (ESOs) work together in a collaborative manner to support students to reach their individual goals.

Job Purpose: (abridged, full details in Applicant Information Pack):

The Leader of Individualised Learning is a member of the Hester Hornbrook Leadership team and is responsible for the implementation and management of student Individualised Learning programs in their region.  The Leader of Individualised Learning will need to work with the Assistant Principal Innovation, Teaching and Learning, Leader of diverse learning and classroom teams to ensure that programs are developed and implemented to assist students to build basic literacy and numeracy skills.

Job Expectations: (abridged, full details in Applicant Information Pack):

  • Developing and assisting in the implementation of specific programs to enhance student educational success, engagement and wellbeing.
  • Develop a high level of expertise in literacy and numeracy teaching across the Academy and support the development of staff in using literacy and numeracy teaching strategies in the classroom.
  • Lead the implementation of the Literacy and Numeracy intervention Programs
  • Lead and develop professional learning opportunities for school staff – teachers/trainers, youth workers and educational support staff, as detailed in the Strategic Plan and/or whole school professional learning plan. This will include working with the Leader of diverse learning in leading an educational intervention team and developing their capacity to impact student outcomes.
 Key Selection Criteria: (abridged, full details in Applicant Information Pack):
  • Demonstrated understanding of the academic needs of young people who have been disengaged from mainstream education.
  • Ability to develop Individualised programs to meet the academic needs of senior secondary students, including literacy and numeracy skill development.
  • Proven ability to maintain accurate records of student assessment and adjustments for the purposes of NCCD.
  • Apply current knowledge and skills related to a range of information and communication technologies to meet educational outcomes in the classroom including the use of assistive technologies for student with disabilities.
  • Experience applying a range of pedagogies to meet the learning needs of all individual young people.

Qualifications and skills:
  • Bachelor of Special Education or related discipline and a current Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) registration.
  • Understanding of relevant legislation, including Child Safe Standards as they are relevant to a Senior Secondary School setting.
  • Satisfactory completion of safety screening including a National Police check, International Police check (if required), a current Victorian Working with Children Check (Employee), current Victorian Drivers Licence, and the right to work in Australia.
