Job description

The Learning Support Worker works alongside teachers to support the education of all students or at times specific students including those with specific learning needs. Central to this role will involve taking direction from teachers so as to support classroom and individual learning so as to increase outcomes for targeted students. This work will require an ability to work effectively in a dynamic, professional team environment, striving for the long-term RNS learning vison, values to ensure goals are aligned with practice.

Responsibilities:

·       To work in consultation with teaching and other staff, to assist students on an individual or group basis in specific learning areas e.g. English as an Additional Language (EAL) acquisition and Literacy support.

·       Work in partnership with teachers and Learning Support Coordinator to implement appropriate adjustments to learning materials or the environment to meet the needs of the student and maximise learning As identified in Individual Learning Plans (ILP’s).

·       Document and provide feedback for analysis by the teacher and/or Learning Support Coordinator

·       Maintain regular, effective communication with teachers and relevant leadership personnel on student performance and strategies/adjustments to be implemented

·       Provide relevant and timely feedback to students during learning sessions and support students by listening, directing, explaining, reassuring, encouraging, re-directing and reinforcing

·       Attend excursions, school events and camps with students as negotiated.

·       Fulfil the duty of care and wellbeing responsibilities with discretion and confidentiality.

·       Participate in education team meetings and student wellbeing meetings as required

·       Assist in the preparation of student curriculum resources and equipment, set up and put away equipment and materials in support of teaching programs.

·       Participate in the monitoring and evaluation of programs and evaluation of individual student involvement and achievement. e.g. extra curricula programs

·       Other duties as required.

Selection Criteria  -   Essential Skills, Knowledge and experience

1.     Demonstrated ability to assist students with learning needs with a focus on inclusive classroom practices

2.     Ability to present a professional, positive, warm, calm and welcoming persona and remain professional by maintaining high levels of confidentiality

3.     Demonstrated ability to show patience, respect, understanding and acceptance of difference in students. Experience with Culturally and Linguistically Diversity (CALD) students valued. 

4.     Display empathy, enthusiasm, commitment and is highly motivated to contribute.

5.     Demonstrate an aptitude, experience or qualification for this position.

6.     Demonstrated knowledge in working with adolescents and young adults who have experienced trauma, are marginalised, disadvantaged, have disabilities and/or from refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds.

7.     Demonstrated capacity to work in a team environment both independently and with others, have excellent communication skills, sound organisation skills and strong Information and Communication Technology knowledge and skill.

Qualifications, Experience & Credentials

·       Relevant qualifications including but not exclusively; Certificate III or IV in Education Support or a Diploma of Education Support or similar.

·       Relevant LEARNING SUPPORT experience, including working with Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) students or communities with complex needs.  Experience in a flexible school setting highly regarded.

·       Working with Children Check

·       100-point Proof of Identity required

Employment Conditions

There is flexibility for the right candidate for this to be a 4 to 5 day per week role (or 30-38 hours a week role). 

·      Appointment of the successful applicant will be subject to:

      -    Reference checks

      -   A satisfactory Pre-Employment Disclosure Declaration

·       Evidence that the applicant has completed training in Child Safety within one month of commencement  (a DET link to on-line training for non-government schools will be provided).

·      A 6-month probationary period will apply and induction and professional support programs will be provided.

·      The position reports to the Assistant Principal, or their nominee.
