Employment Type: Part Time (17.5 hours per week)

Duration: Up until March 2025 (Fixed Term mat leave role)

Remuneration: Level B Academic $119, 440 pro rata + 17% super + annual leave loading

Location: South- West Sydney Clinical Campuses- Liverpool Hospital/Bankstown Hospital

This position is open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants only. Position Summary:

The Lecturer – Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health is a unique position, designated for individuals of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage.

Operating at Level B, the Lecturer is tasked with contributing to the teaching and service missions of the School of Clinical Medicine, South-West Sydney Campuses, and the Indigenous Health Education Unit.

As part of UNSW's Education Focussed roles, the Lecturer will specialize in education, dedicating their efforts to delivering high-quality teaching and implementing initiatives to enhance the educational experience of students.

Reporting to the Director of Indigenous Health Education, with a dotted line to the Director of Medical Education of South-West Sydney Campuses, this role carries no direct reports but entails substantial responsibility in fostering educational excellence and cultural competency within the university's teaching and learning communities.

Key Accountabilities (but not limited to):

  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with local Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities, health services, and relevant stakeholders.
  • In conjunction with the Indigenous Health Education team, deliver cultural safety training to students, faculty, and staff to promote a culturally safe and respectful learning, working and healthcare environment.
  • Support and mentor Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students enrolled in Medicine at the South- West Sydney Campuses as needed.
  • Initiate and support the development of approaches to teaching and learning in the School of Clinical Medicine, South- West Sydney Campuses, the support of more senior academics and the Indigenous Health Education Unit in relation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health curricula.
  • Design and develop learning activities and resources and provide assessment and feedback using a range of suitable approaches and learning environments that align with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health curricula.
  • Conduct and support non-Indigenous Academics to conduct classes, assess student learning achievements and support students in undergraduate courses that align with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health curricula in line with UNSW policy and the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health and Cultural Safety Strategy 2020- 2025.

Skills & Experience Required (but not limited to):

  • Bachelor’s degree, ideally in the field of education or Indigenous health, and/ or relevant work experience. Master’s or PhD in the fields of education or Indigenous health would be an advantage or a demonstrated commitment to work towards a Master’s and PhD.
  • Demonstrated thorough understanding of the issues, directions, and challenges in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health.
  • Sound knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and history or extensive experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and organisations, and to create and maintain ties with relevant academic and professional staff.
  • Sound understanding of University and Faculty administration, practices, policies and procedures.
  • Proven record of management experience with effective strategic leadership and team building capabilities.
