Job description

  • Full-time, continuing role based at the University of Sydney's Camperdown Campus.
  • An exciting opportunity to conduct research and deliver teaching in the department of Korean Studies
  • Offering a remuneration package of $118,390p.a., including leave loading and a generous employer's contribution to superannuation

About the opportunity

The Discipline of Korean Studies within the School of Languages and Cultures is seeking to appoint a Lecturer (Level B continuing). The Discipline offers a comprehensive program of studies, incorporating language acquisition for learners at all levels, and covering many aspects of Korean history, culture and society.

The incumbent will be expected to teach Korean language and Korean Studies units. In order to take advantage of current popularity of Korean language units, the Discipline would prefer a person who has a demonstrable record of teaching all levels of Korean language at the University level and research publications in her/his own area of specialty. Researchers in the field of Korean Studies with a relevant PhD in Humanities and Social Sciences are encouraged to apply. Candidates with a background in Language Education, Literature, Translation, Cultural Studies or Film Studies are particularly sought.

The successful applicant will be expected to:

  • Maintain a research profile compatible with the Discipline's research programs through publication and research grant application
  • Coordinate and teach language units in Korean Studies including developing online materials for language teaching and assessment at all levels from Beginner to Advanced
  • Coordinate and teach culture units in Korean Studies and adapt to the program's needs with regard to curriculum development
  • Participate in teaching collaboration including team-teaching of undergraduate units in the program and the school
  • Contribute to the supervision and assessment of honours and postgraduate research students in Korean Studies.
  • Coordinate and help promote Korean Studies within the University and in the broader community
  • Contribute to academic administration
  • Work flexibly and collaboratively in a team environment and take on roles in administration in the Department and School.

There's also the opportunity to make an active contribution to interdisciplinary teaching by developing elective units for inclusion in one of the following areas: Asian Studies, International and Comparative Literature, and/or Translation studies (areas of focus would reflect the applicants' expertise, highlighting the close link between interdisciplinary teaching and research encouraged within the School).

About you

  • Demonstrated experience in designing and teaching Korean language modules at all levels (beginners to advanced)
  • Demonstrated success in promoting student retention and achieving high levels of language competency
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and teaching online units as well as commitment to multi-media, multi-mode, and digital teaching.
  • Evidence of organisational ability, capacity for teamwork and administration, and ability to maintain effective working relationships with students and colleagues.

The following criteria are also desirable:

  • Experience of collaborative and interdisciplinary teaching and research
  • Experience in developing and implementing innovative teaching including but not limited to digital teaching methodologies
  • Experience in supervision of honours and postgraduate research students
  • Ability to undertake collaborative research
  • A record of research grant success relative to opportunity
