About the Role This is an exciting opportunity to join an innovative academic team working in the Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences, School of Health Sciences, within the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences. The Department offers a flagship four-year Doctor of Optometry (OD) program and also teaches Vision Sciences at an undergraduate level (subjects contributing to the Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Biomedicine).
The position is a teaching and research appointment. The appointee will also be expected to undertake research in their emerging field of specialization, one that is well aligned with the Department's core research themes and complementary to the Department’s existing research capacity. The appointee will join a successful team in delivering and supporting teaching and learning in Optometry and Vision Sciences within the Department. This will include responsibilities in the Doctor of Optometry program as well as specific undergraduate and graduate subjects.
Your responsibilities will include:
Coordinating and teaching into subjects within the OD program and undergraduate programs as required
Maintaining and developing research in areas aligned with the Departmental research priorities
Participating in community and professional activities related to Optometry and Vision Sciences including attendance and presentations at conferences and seminars
Who We Are Looking For You should have a developing national research profile, evidenced by secured research funding and a strong publications track record with great indicators of impact and quality. You will have experience in teaching, mentoring and/or supervising of students and/or graduate optometrists, and be consistently looking to improve your skills in these spaces. Ideally you will have an understanding of general academic administration activities such as subject coordination, course advice and examination processes. It would also be desirable if your research interests aligned with, and complement, those that are currently pursued by the Department's Research academics. You will also have:
A PhD in Optometry or related discipline
Strong organisation, planning and time management skills.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with an ability to build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders (internal and external) and work collaboratively;
an Optometry qualification that provides eligibility for APHRA registration (Desirable)

This role requires that the successful candidate must undergo and maintain an up-to-date Working with Children Check. This is essential to guarantee a secure environment for all individuals at the University. In the case the selected candidate doesn't have a valid Working with Children Check, they will be able to apply for the WWCC as part of the initial onboarding procedures.

Your New Team – Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences The Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences currently comprises twenty-four academic staff (10 teaching and research, 5 teaching specialist and 9 research only). The Department is located within the newly renovated 200-202 Berkeley Street in the Medical Precinct of the Parkville Campus. Here it houses its offices, research laboratories, teaching spaces and the Melbourne Eyecare Clinic, which offers patient care for University staff, students, the general public and for specialist referral by other practitioners. The Department also has a footprint within the Kenneth Myer Building on the Parkville campus, alongside the Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health.
In 2011 the Department commenced the 4-year Doctor of Optometry (OD) postgraduate degree as part of the new Melbourne Model. Approximately 290 students are enrolled in this professional entry-to-practice optometry program. The Department also teaches visual neuroscience and Vision-related breadth subjects in the Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Biomedicine degrees and contributes breadth subjects in the new generation degrees offered by the University.
