Our research explores the whole spectrum of electronic systems, circuits and devices, as well as computer engineering, from underpinning theories to applications with industry leading partners. We also deliver high quality teaching in microelectronics and embedded systems for our undergraduate and MSc degree programmes.We develop pioneering electronic devices, circuits and systems techniques to design new types of information and communication technologies. We provide cutting edge, explainable, interpretable and verifiable machine learning and AI solutions for the next generation of autonomous systems. Our unique research and expertise of designing microelectronic systems hardware and software are proving invaluable in a wide range of industries in computing, environment, aging, healthcare, e.g., our ongoing research collaborations across the UK and internationally. We are home to spinout companies, e.g. Literal Labs, specialising in unique hardware-software solutions for edge AI.Contemporary electronics and computer technologies and IT infrastructures face challenges in meeting evolving demands for energy efficiency, data processing, and data transfer speeds. Addressing these challenges, necessitates the adoption of innovative computing principles and architectures. We are seeking to appoint a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in next generation computing and electronic systems. Key focus areas include: Machine learning and Artificial Intelligence at the edge, design of electronic and computer systems hardware/software codesign for embedded systems and IoT.The role will involve publishing research in high quality journals, securing research funding from a range of sources, contributing to the School’s current menu of research specialisations and participate in our extensive portfolio of government, industrial and research council funded activities. The successful candidate will teach AI systems engineering at undergraduate and post graduate levels, supervising postgraduate research students and act as a personal tutor to selected Undergraduate and Master’s degree candidates, participating in the administration of relevant degree programmes and modules within the School, and where appropriate contribute to the development of new initiatives in these areas.It is expected that the successful candidate will carry out internationally leading research in developing AI systems at different levels of abstraction, including modelling, simulation, design and validation. They will also provide leadership, motivation and line management of a group of researchers, including PhD researchers; and they will represent the School and University at national and international meetings to disseminate research outputs, and perform networking activities regionally, nationally and internationally in order to ensure that AI systems engineering methods and their applications developed at Newcastle are connected to decision makers and to world leading research activity in this space.We promote excellence by creating an inclusive culture and environment where shared practice is the norm.
