Job description

We've been trusted to serve Aussie communities since 1914 and grown to become a top 30-listed on the ASX with 120,000 team members and a portfolio of iconic brands. At Coles Group, you'll not only get to make a difference to millions of Aussie lives-you'll also get to see your impact.
About the team
People and Culture is dedicated to creating an engaged and empowered workplace. One that's strong, diverse and where our team members have exciting career pathways to choose from. We do it by making people's lives easier through better experiences, useful tools, and by providing ongoing opportunities to learn and grow.
About the role
A new opportunity for a Legal and Governance Counsel (Employment Law) has arisen within our close-knit P&C legal function. Our managers are supportive and approachable, and we value a culture fit that brings levity and collaboration to the team.
This role will give you the ability to run matters autonomously, offers a breadth of Employment Law work across advisory, transactional and litigious areas and also allows you to work closely with the business to implement a number of legislative compliance changes.
What you'll be doing
Reporting to the Managing Counsel, People & Culture you'll:

  • Provide advice to the P&C function on all aspects of the Employment Law lifecycle.
  • Ensure Coles businesses are apprised of changes to employment related legislation/case law.
  • Design governance controls to ensure that the business is compliant with any employment legislative changes.
  • Provide strategic advice and assistance with P&C related enterprise-wide legal compliance projects.
  • Manage P&C litigation on behalf of Coles.
About you and your skills
With a minimum of 4 years post-qualification legal working experience, you bring a strong foundation in Employment Law, particularly in litigation, and ideally come from a large reputable law firm or corporate.
Core to your success will be the ability to manage stakeholder expectations and take them on the journey, ensuring alignment with broader P&C team goals. High expectations come with the territory, and the right candidate will thrive in a challenging yet supportive atmosphere.
You'll also have:
  • Ability to influence and simplify complex legal matters.
  • Strong command of Employment Law, particularly the Fair Work Act.
  • Broad skill set across transactional, litigious and advisory contexts.
  • Confidence in skill set and decision-making abilities.
Take your next step into something bigger, apply now
With us it's not about the discounts (although you do get those), it's about joining a team where your wellbeing and professional development is invested in and celebrating your contributions is the norm. And because everyone leads unique lives, we offer flexible work including work from home, additional leave and parental leave entitlements.
We're continuing to build a gender equitable team, and a culture that's just as diverse, inclusive and welcoming as the communities we serve. We encourage applications from people of all ages, cultures (including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples), abilities, sexual orientation and gender identities.
We're happy to adjust our recruitment process to support candidates with disability. Find out more in the 'Our Recruitment Process' section of our careers site.
