Job description

The Role:

This is an exciting opportunity to join a well-established mixed farming enterprise in Tooma, NSW, as the newly appointed Livestock Manager. The role entails managing a small staff and overseeing 1500 Angus cows, including approximately 500 annually retained heifers. The business heavily focuses on genetics and uses a mix of Hazeldean, Landfall, and Weeran Bulls.

As the Livestock Manager, you will be responsible for implementing the farm's annual livestock program, which includes joining, assisting in bull selection, attending bull sales, calving (July/August), organising livestock logistics, ordering and maintaining on-hand supplies, and all other facets of best practice animal husbandry.

Since this is a mixed enterprise, you will need to work with the cropping element of this business to plan pasture renovation in line with their cropping rotations and manage grazing logistics in line with the annual cropping plan. The property is well-provisioned, so part of your role will be maintaining infrastructure, including yards, water troughs, and fences, to ensure all livestock are managed safely and efficiently.

Although this is primarily a livestock-based role, our client seeks someone willing to assist with all aspects of the operation when required. This includes helping with the roll-out of cropping and irrigation programs each year.

The Property & Employer:

Situated in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains, Tooma Station stands as a testament to the success of The Tooma Group, a distinguished family-owned agribusiness with a rich history spanning 48 years. The enterprise encompasses production farms, cleaning warehouses, and the renowned national seed company, Upper Murray Seeds. From the base in Albury, NSW, UMS exports seeds globally, showcasing a commitment to continuous growth and expansion. The Tooma Group specialises in seed production and boasts a vibrant livestock enterprise focusing on Angus cattle and trade lambs across irrigated and dryland properties in NSW, VIC and TAS.

At the heart of this success is Tooma Station, a sprawling 6,400-acre property flourishing in a high-rainfall area of the Snowy Mountains. Here, a diverse range of crops, from temperate forage seed to hybrid canola, thrive under dryland and irrigated conditions. The farm's irrigation systems, including pivots and hard hoses, support approximately 1500 Angus breeders renowned for their high-quality genetics. To complement the agricultural prowess, Tooma Station maintains a top-tier fleet featuring equipment like John Deere and Claas headers, an Amazone Pantera SP sprayer, and a Seedhawk air seeder and various John Deere Tractors ranging from 110-290 hp. This successful business employs a team of dedicated permanent and part-time employees, which expands seasonally to meet peak workloads.
