 Living Skills Worker - Dawn House

Reporting to the Team Leader

Dawn House is a domestic violence crisis accommodation service located in Darwin.

The position is expected to provide high quality, effective services that respond flexibly to the immediate needs of women and children who are escaping from domestic/family violence through the provision of Living Skills, including budgeting to assist women to maintain future tenancies.

The key client responsibilities are:

  • Assessments
  • Provide support and referral services to clients and link with relevant government and non-government agencies
  • Monitor rent payments and organise with clients rent deductions as required
  • Monitor cleanliness of accommodation units and assist clients to maintain an acceptable level of cleanliness as per Dawn House guidelines
  • Assist clients with budgeting and other life skills as identified by client to support a successful tenancy
  • To welcome new arrivals, showing them around premises, settling into accommodation, provide information and explain house rules and answering any questions or addressing concerns as they arise
  • Develop and maintain up to date case plans with clients, identifying needs and monitor case loads
  • Work within the confines of confidentiality and ensure that professional boundaries are always maintained when working with clients, staff and external bodies
  • Encourage clients to participate in activities both within and outside of the shelter

The key Administration responsibilities are:

  • Input data and maintain up to date client information in the Specialists Homelessness Information Platform (SHIP) database
  • Carry out administrative functions of the position such as data entry, updating case file records and completing handover and monthly reports
  • Other duties as required

Selection Criteria

  1. Demonstrated ability to work within set procedures and policies and maintain data management systems
  2. Clear understanding of theory and practice issues regarding violence against women and feminist practice.
  3. Ability to negotiate, plan and gain client outcomes by working within set time frames, and provide client case management
  4. Ability to assess crisis and challenging behaviours using assessment tools and referral services and demonstrated actions
  5. Demonstrated ability and attitude to work with women regardless of their socioeconomic status, age, nationality, and religious, cultural, sexual or political orientation
  6. Demonstrated communication skills and confidentiality skills including conflict resolution, when dealing with various stakeholders
  7. Knowledge of Child Protection Acts and Mandatory Reporting Legislation
  8. Hold a NT Police Clearance and Ochre Card
  9. Current manual NT drivers Licence

Desirable:

  1. Experience working within the non-government, community services sector
  2. Financial management qualifications or experience
