The Legal Services Commission (Legal Services) is an independent statutory authority providing free legal assistance to all South Australians. As the largest legal assistance service in SA, Legal Services offers a range of services, from legal information and advice to legal representation in the areas of family law, CRIMINAL LAW, and civil law. With a focus on client service and an unwavering commitment to the community, Legal Services is now seeking a dynamic and experienced CRIMINAL LAWyer to lead its Criminal Law Practice Division.
Role Overview
Reporting to the Chief Legal Officer, this role is responsible for providing strategic leadership to the Criminal Law Practice Division and its exceptional legal team. The Criminal Law Practice Division provides high quality legal advice and representation to some of the most vulnerable members of our community and plays a critical role in securing a fair and effective criminal justice system in South Australia. As a member of the Legal Services’ Senior Management Team, this role will contribute to Legal Services’ continuous improvement, including by developing and implementing systems and processes for best practice for criminal defence legal assistance, and will support and promote staff engagement and development consistent with Legal Services’ strategic goals of being a model legal aid service and employer of choice. This role will promote collaboration with Team Leaders, Managing Counsel, and staff across Legal Services to ensure the delivery of consistent, high quality and efficient CRIMINAL LAW advice and legal representation while partnering effectively with external stakeholders to improve outcomes for clients and the community. The Manager will be expected to undertake the most complex and high profile CRIMINAL LAW solicitor files as appropriate and consistent with their leadership responsibilities.
Skills, Knowledge, Experience
The successful candidate must be an admitted practitioner of the Supreme Court of South Australia or currently eligible for admission to practice in South Australia, hold an unrestricted Category C Practicing Certificate and a minimum of eleven years admission experience. Additionally, they must be appointed to the Legal Service’s General Panel of Practitioners and Complex Criminal Law Panel (as a solicitor) or be eligible for appointment. Legal Services is seeking a collaborative, and empathetic leader with outstanding written and verbal communication skills, who can effectively lead and motivate staff, while building and maintaining productive relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders. Candidates with experience working with digital document management systems and knowledge of technology in legal practice are highly desirable for this role.
