About the Role

BHP is a leading global resources company. Our Minerals Australia business includes operations in Queensland, Wester Australia, New South Wales and South Australia, focusing on coal, iron ore, copper and nickel. 

 

The Legal function is responsible for providing strategic legal advice to enable BHP to achieve its commercial objectives and manage legal risk in compliance with applicable laws and consistent with the BHP Charter and Code of Conduct.  

 

We have an excellent opportunity for a lawyer, with strong work Health and Safety experience, to join BHP’s Legal team, as a Managing Counsel. This is a unique opportunity to utilise your skills and experience with a leading global resources company. 

 

This role will provide legal advice and support to the BHP Group and particularly the Minerals Australia assets and functions on work Health and Safety matters, including incident response and investigations, regulatory engagement, emerging risks and Health and Safety governance.  

 

This is permanent role and based in Brisbane, Perth or Adelaide, with occasional travel as required.

 

In this role your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
 

  • Conforming with the BHP Charter, Code of Conduct, Global Standards and relevant statutory obligations.
  • Having an overriding commitment to Health and Safety.
  • Establishing yourself as a trusted adviser with key stakeholders and maintaining strong relationships between Legal and other functions and assets.
  • Maintaining deep functional expertise in the area of work Health and Safety law and providing strategic legal advice on complex and key work Health and Safety matters and issues across the Minerals Australia business, including those matters that impact multiple assets and functions.
  • Being accountable for identifying work Health and Safety legal risk and working collaboratively with Legal and other functions to ensure BHP is appropriately managing work Health and Safety legal and other external risks.
     

About You

 

As a successful candidate you will possess the following: 
 

  • You will be a qualified lawyer who is able to practice in Australia and has experience working for a top-tier firm or in-house in a similar role.  Previous experience in providing practical advice on work Health and Safety matters, ideally in the mining sector, is essential.  
  • You will have the ability to work well in a team environment.
  • As a true strategic adviser, you are able to draw on your experience and strong commercial acumen to solve complex problems and achieve business results. 
  • Additionally, you will be an excellent communicator (both oral and written) with the ability to negotiate effectively, and to influence stakeholders and build relationships with key stakeholders at all levels. 

 

To be considered for the role a Law degree and the ability to practice in Australia is essential. Post admission experience of at least 6-8 years is desirable.
