Position Overview:

The Managing Editor is responsible for the editorial integrity and production quality of all LIV publications, specifically the monthly, peer-reviewed Law Institute Journal (LIJ), LIJ news briefs, the annual diary-directory, the annual report and other bespoke publications. 

The role requires oversight and administration of all elements of publishing (both print and digital), managing the publications team and oversight of contractors that includes journalists, sub-editors, advertising representatives and support staff; producing revenue-generating publications; and preparing and administering a department strategic plan and budget. 

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Review and implement LIV editorial policy across publications.
  • Set the editorial agenda for the LIJ – monthly and annually 
  • Liaise with potential contributors, authors, and commission articles 
  • Maintain awareness and research of relevant legal news 
  • Develop annual strategic plans for LIV publications to facilitate organisation ofsolicited and internally produced material
  • Administer editorial submissions, letters to the editor, requests for assistance from members and legal stakeholders.
  • Ensure LIV publications are published to the highest standard and to deadline
  • Strategically manage the resources and workflows across contributors and suppliers to ensure the efficient and timely delivery of content 
  • Write editorial content as required for LIJ print and online
  • Develop and manage budgets aligned with publications, including approval of invoices 
  • Identify, develop and enact a digital first content strategy for the LIJ including creating and amplifying diverse content

To be considered for this role, you will demonstrate: 

  • A relevant degree in Communications, Journalism or Publishing, taking in editing, writing and digital communications is essential 
  • Legal qualification highly regarded
  • 10+ years publishing experience with an emphasis on digital publishing with a commercial focus
  • Demonstrated experience in generating highly engaging and authoritative content via forward-thinking editorial decision-making and writing 
  • Experience with the legal profession and justice system to inform editorial decisions and outlook 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, InDesign
  • Commitment to use of plain English 
  • Proficiency and experience in overseeing and directing resources and workflows to ensure efficient and timely delivery of content, while maintaining the highest standards of accuracy, relevance and journalistic integrity
