Job description

G. A. Glanville & Co is seeking to employ a person with suitable skills to become an RAN Licenced Naval Hull Inspector to complement our established Naval Hull Inspector pool.  We are seeking to fill a position at the company’s Sydney office located within Garden Island Dockyard, NSW.  Training will be provided for the right person upon job acceptance.

The successful candidate will have a maritime industry background, looking to use their experience to make a career in this specialist role supporting Naval platforms.

A Naval Hull Inspector is a specialist form of marine survey work, focusing on the hull and structure of Naval vessels, acting on the Owner’s behalf to determine through life maintenance and repairs.  Our company provides these services at each of the major bases in Sydney, Cairns, Darwin and Henderson (WA).

Essential

This position is open to candidates who are Australian Citizens only.  Unfortunately, we are unable to process applications for candidates who are Permanent Residents, candidates seeking sponsorship in Australia or those who hold Working Holiday visa.

Background & Experience

  • Maritime background with good knowledge of ship fabrication and structural detailing in both steel and aluminium - Highly desirable
  • Experience in ship repair (steel and aluminium vessels) - Highly desirable
  • Previous experience in Naval Hull Inspection or Classification Society survey - Highly desirable
  • Knowledge of marine paints, application and inspection – Highly desirable
  • Knowledge and experience in Ultrasonic Thickness Measurement – Highly desirable

Certifications

  • Capable of passing a police check for security clearance – Essential
  • Current construction Industry white card - Desirable
  • Current confined space certificate - Desirable
  • Current working at heights certificate - Desirable
  • AGSVA clearance to Baseline level - Highly Desirable

Qualifications

  • Tertiary/Vocational qualifications in one of the following – Essential:
  • Trade Certificate in steel fabrication or boat building 
  • Associate Diploma or Degree in Naval Architecture
  • Department of Defence Naval Hull Inspector Licence - highly desirable, however necessary training will be provided for the right person.
  • Completion of RAN Naval Hull Inspector’s Course - Desirable but not essential.

  • Computer literate - Essential
  • Preparing written reports - Essential
  • Good communication skills both verbal and written - Essential
  • Excellent attention to detail, concentration & methodical approach to work - Essential
  • Thorough and professional attitude in all aspects of work including safety and environment - Essential
  • Working under pressure without sacrificing quality of work - Essential
  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills - Essential 

Your Daily Tasks

  • Conduct physical inspection and condition assessment of hull structures including confined space work inside tanks.
  • Preparing technical reports to document the results of physical inspections using the mandated computer based data management and reporting system.
  • Quoting and managing jobs.
  • Liaison with client, ship repairer and ship’s staff to coordinate daily inspection activities.
  • Supervision and mentoring trainee inspectors.
