About the opportunity

NSW Health Pathology's Westmead Transfusion Laboratory is looking for an experienced transfusion Medical Laboratory Scientist to work in a temporary full-time capacity and willing to participate in a flexible 24/7 roster.

Westmead Transfusion laboratory is the key provider of transfusion services to a busy tertiary teaching hospital and the principal referral centre for other laboratories. The laboratory performs comprehensive transfusion testing including complex antibody investigations and compatibility testing.

What you'll be doing

Responsible for delivering a range of operational laboratory activities including the coordination and provisions of scientific and technical training and the ongoing review, development and quality management of laboratory practices to ensure compliance with operational standards and procedures, quality standards and continual process improvement.

  1. Bachelor Degree or higher degree in Science/Medical Laboratory Science or an equivalent qualification, with subjects relevant to Transfusion and pathology from a recognised tertiary institution.
  2. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the delivery of pathology services relevant to the Transfusion laboratory, including use of Laboratory Information Systems, Patient Systems and Quality Control Systems and computer programs such as Microsoft Office suite
  3. Customer focused approach displaying well-developed interpersonal skills and good oral and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with customers, patients and clinical and laboratory staff, along with report writing skills, statistical evaluation of scientific data and the ability to effectively communicate policies and procedures
  4. Ability to work in a responsible and efficient manner and to manage competing priorities to meet deadlines
  5. Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment while working autonomously to deliver results within specified timeframes and contribute to a range of diagnostic skills relevant to the laboratory
  6. Display initiative, problem solving and analytical skills including an ability to apply established principles in a pathology laboratory and investigate and resolve general and complex issues within the laboratory environment
  7. Sound understanding of legislation, policies and requirements that impact the laboratory environment including work health and safety and privacy requirements
  8. Demonstrated current knowledge in Transfusion laboratory.

Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination Against Specified Infectious Diseases

This is a Category A position. All Category A applicants must read and understand NSW Health Policy Directive PD2022_030 Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination Against Specified Diseases. All recruits must agree to comply with the requirements outlined in this policy. All recruits must provide evidence against specified diseases and comply with the requirements of this policy at their own cost prior to appointment.

All NSW Health workers are required to have completed a primary course of a COVID-19 vaccine which has been approved or recognised by the Therapeutics Goods Administration (TGA). Additionally, Category A workers are required to receive a booster dose three months after completing the primary course of COVID-19 vaccinations. New applicants must have completed the vaccination course prior to commencement with NSW Health, or provide an approved medical contraindication certificate (IM011 immunisation medical exemption form) certifying the worker cannot have any approved COVID-19 vaccines available in NSW.

Acceptable proof of vaccination is the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) Immunisation History Statement or AIR COVID-19 Digital Certificate. Booster doses are highly recommended for all health care workers who have completed the primary course of COVID-19 vaccinations.
