Medical Laboratory Scientist
- Grade 1 or Grade 2 (depending on experience)
- Full Time Fixed Term - including monthly ADO
- Centrally located at The Doherty Institute in Parkville, Melbourne.
The WHO Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Influenza has operated since 1992 and is one of 5 WHO (World Health Organisation) designated Centres that is involved in human influenza virus analysis, influenza vaccine recommendations and influenza antiviral effectiveness monitoring. The Centre also has interests in other respiratory viruses (such as RSV and SARS-CoV-2) and conducts research activities across all of these areas.
Your new role:
We are looking for passionate and dedicated individual to join the Antiviral group at the WHO Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Influenza (WHOCCRRI), VIDRL. The Antiviral group currently monitors seasonal influenza strains for reduced sensitivity to licensed antivirals and performs research on investigational antivirals to influenza using preclinical models of infection.
- Perform various in vitro assays to determine drug sensitivities/drug toxicities against influenza and other respiratory viruses
- Characterize influenza viruses and other respiratory viruses using a variety of molecular techniques such as real time PCR, Sanger sequencing, pyrosequencing and NGS
- Perform cell culture and virus isolation
- Perform classical virological techniques such as TCID50, plaquing, virus passaging
You have a Bachelor of Science or Hons degree with a major in genetics/microbiology/immunology/Virology (or similar discipline) and at least 1 years laboratory experience, as well as:
- Proficiency in in vitro assays, ideally in determining drug sensitivity assays
- Experienced in RNA extraction, real time PCR, Sanger sequencing, NGS
- Good molecular biology skills such as real time-PCR, cloning, transformations/transfections, etc
- Experienced in cell culture experience and virus isolation
- Able to accurately record data electronically or onto worksheets
- Be well organised, self-motivated and keen to learn new techniques
- Well organised and self-motivated and able to develop new assays
- Able to work effectively either alone or in a team
