Job description

Apply increasingly independent scientific judgement in the analysis of patient specimens leading to the verification and validation of test results and the provision of advice to the clinical unit where appropriateThe Medical Laboratory Scientist (Multiskilled) in the core laboratory reports to the Senior Scientist Continuous Shift.

The successful candidate will apply broad multidiscipline scientific judgement in the analysis of patient specimens leading to the verification and validation of test results and the provision of advice to the clinical unit where appropriate to ensure that the pathology service meets the requirements of the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service (SCHHS), commensurate with level of experience.  Aditionally, you will contribute to and participate in diagnostic testing and related duties following Pathology Queensland established accredited protocols and standards within a multidisciplinary team in accordance with prescribed professional, legislative, administrative and ethical standards, ensuring that the laboratory service meets  National Association of Testing Authorities and International Standardisation Organisation (NATA/ISO) accreditation/certification requirements as per District health service.

Key competencies (role specific criteria)

You will be assessed on your ability to demonstrate the following:

  • Demonstrated knowledge, expertise and skill in the delivery of scientific judgement within a multidisciplinary laboratory.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply established principles to a multidisciplinary service with provision of results and clinical advice in a client focused manner.
  • Demonstrated ability (or ability to rapidly acquire the skill) to identify, develop and implement quality and service improvement activities in accordance with NATA/ISO accreditation/certification.

Qualifications, registrations and other requirements

  • The successful applicant must hold at least a tertiary degree (or equivalent) formal qualification (s) in Medical Laboratory science.
  • Shift conditions (will be required to work a rotating roster of day, evening and night shifts over a 7 day period).

  • Appointment to this position requires proof of qualification. Certified copies of the required information must be provided to the appropriate supervisor/ manager, prior to the commencement of clinical duties

  • It will be a condition of employment for this role for the employee to be, and remain, vaccinated against one or more of the following vaccine preventable diseases during their employment: Hepatitis A & B, Measles, Mumps, Pertussis, Rubella and Varicella.
  • Additional vaccinations including Japanese Encephalitis and Rabies may also be required for this position.
  • Existing staff that are engaged prior to 1 July 2016 are not subject to this condition of employment unless they apply for a role with VPD requirements that is with a different Queensland Health entity (i.e. one HHS to another HHS, department to a HHS, or HHS to department).
