Job description

There are three positions available, each of three years duration. The program requires AMTP trainees to spend one year each at CASA, at Virgin Australia and at Qantas. CASA is managing the primary recruitment process, however the employment contract for each rotation will be between the trainee and the agency managing the individual rotation.

About the opportunity

The AMTP trainee will, under the direction and guidance of CASA Senior Medical Officers, develop the skills to fulfil a professional role in the practice of aerospace medicine. This includes undertaking aviation medical assessments, research and project roles, and other skills required for aerospace medicine professionals in regulatory and aviation industry positions.

Other responsibilities will include contributing to the setting, maintenance and monitoring of aviation medical standards, practices and procedures and related duties including training examiners and addressing public health and occupational medicine issues within the aviation industry.

The position may require some travel to fulfill the role.

AMTP trainees will have responsibility, under Senior Medical Officer oversight, for the following deliverables:

  • Undertake assessments of medical conditions for the issue of pilot and air traffic controller medical certificates.
  • Support medical assessors with medical assessment work and response to queries from applicants and medical practitioners.
  • Contribute to the maintenance and monitoring of aviation medical standards, practices and procedures for the issue of aviation medical certificates, undertaking audits as required.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of evidence-based policy.
  • Support training in and presentation of aeromedical content at appropriate meetings and workshops.
  • Provide professional medical input on public health issues of relevance to the aviation industry such as cabin and passenger health, pandemic planning, on-board medical emergencies.
  • Undertake other Aviation Medicine-related projects in conjunction with CASA, QF or VA as agreed with the AMTP Board and the Australasian College of Aerospace Medicine.
  • Promote workplace safety, equity and diversity and participative management and environmental management practices in the workplace and act in accordance with CASA, QF and VA values and behaviours.
  • Ability to engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees in a sensitive, respectful and equitable manner.)

Our ideal candidate

Our ideal candidate must demonstrate the following:

  • Current unrestricted medical registration in Australia.
  • Any experience, qualifications or training required to undertake ACAsM Training Program, as specified in ACAsM’s Training Curriculum.
  • Ability to become registered as a Drug and Alcohol Management Plan (DAMP) Medical Review Officer (MRO) with either VA or QF or as a CASA MRO.
  • Ability to become a Designated Aviation Medical Examiner (DAME) under Part 67 of the Civil Aviation Safety Regulations.

The following ideal candidate requirements are desirable:

  • Holds a Diploma of Aviation Medicine or other postgraduate coursework qualification in aviation physiology and clinical Aviation Medicine or higher (or else current enrolment in such a course).
  • Highly developed communication (written and verbal) skills, including the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • A range of clinical practice which provides good foundations as a generalist medical practitioner.
  • Practical flying experience.
  • Commenced training (or eligible to commence) in Occupational and Environmental Medicine.
  • Qualifications or experience in quality management systems, safety management systems, clinical governance processes.

Eligibility requirements

Employment with CASA is subject to conditions prescribed within the Civil Aviation Act 1988. The following eligibility requirements apply to this position: 

  • At minimum, prospective CASA employees must undergo pre-employment screening. You must be willing to provide required information to successfully undergo a police record check.
  • Must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident.
  • The occupant of the position must have the ability to obtain and maintain a Baseline security clearance.
