About us
Walalakoo Aboriginal Corporation, based in Derby, is a prominent organization representing the Nyikina Mangala people of the Kimberley region in Western Australia. Our vision is to be a self-sufficient organisation that adopts the world's best practice in environmental and agricultural sustainability and provides social and material prosperity to Nyikina Mangala communities.
We are seeking a Men's Ranger Coordinator with a drive and passion to support our Traditional Owners of the Nyikina Mangala Determination area.
The position is based in Jarlmadanga Burru an Aboriginal community located 86 kilometres (53 mi) southeast of Derby, with regular travel and time in Derby.

Qualifications & experience
  • Experience in Indigenous land management work; or strong scientific, natural resource management or practical skills relevant to Indigenous land management/Ranger Program delivery.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and work effectively with Aboriginal people to achieve shared goals.
  • Experience in developing and implementing Project Plans/schedules, project budgets and risk management.
  • Experience in reporting to funding bodies, collecting information/evidence on a weekly basis.
  • Demonstrated ability to innovate, adapt to changing situations, find practical solutions and work effectively through collaborative methods.
  • Current manual drivers’ licence and competence in the use of a manual 4WD vehicle in remote and off-road conditions.
Tasks & responsibilities
  • Providing support to Walalakoo to implement their Healthy Country Plan and contribute to the maintenance and improvement of unique cultural sites, flora and fauna, and environment.
  • Undertake field work on-country alongside the Nyikina Mangala Rangers.
  • Support consultations towards creating Indigenous Protection Area(s).
  • Help to improve Western and Nyikina Mangala knowledge bases on the state of the environment and areas for attention and action.
  • Support Walalakoo to generate greater economic opportunities and contribute to the strengthening of language and culture.
  • Support Nyikina Mangala people to find and remain in sustainable work in land and water management.
  • Develop strong partnerships/relationships with research and philanthropic bodies.
  • An ability and willingness to work in a regional location and undertake fieldwork for extended periods in remote areas of the Nyikina Mangala Determination Area/surrounding regions.
  • Use appropriate initiative and work productively with limited supervision in sometimes complex and remote situations as part of a geographically dispersed team.
