Job description

The position offers an opportunity to work closely with the Traditional Owners, Circle of Elders to deliver the priorities and outcomes identified in the Murujuga Cultural Management Plan, Murujuga Strategic Directions and other ventures approved by the Murujuga Board of Directors. 

This position offers learning and training opportunities for Aboriginal people with a heritage connection to one of the five language groups of Murujuga being Ngarluma, Yindjibarndi, Yaburuara, Wong-Goo-Tt-Oo and Mardudhunera.

Responsibilities of the Position and Broad Outline of Duties: 

Land and Sea Country

  • Assist in the day-to-day operation of the Ranger Works Program. 
  • Record ‘Land and Sea Country’ knowledge, information and data and store in an agreed form. 
  • Use basic power and hand tools and machinery. 
  • Undertaking various on country project initiatives as directed.
  • Other duties as directed by the Ranger Coordinator. 

Cultural Heritage

  • Deliver Rock Art tours, cultural awareness presentations and Welcome to Country presentations.
  • Work and communicate with ‘Circle of Elders’ 
  • Safely record, process, map and store gathered Cultural knowledge and data. 
  • Attend staff training as required.

Administration Skills

  • Process applicable emails and electronic documents. 
  • Assist in the development of project plans and document Murujuga Ranger Team Works Program – monthly, quarterly, and annually. 

Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S)

  • Ensure OH&S policies are implemented.  
  • Strive to achieve an incident free workplace. 
  • Follow and carry out WorkSafe OH&S procedures in the workplace.  
  • Ensure all incidents are recorded and addressed as soon as practicable. 
  • Provide and apply basic first aid and respond to emergencies when necessary.  
  • Learn how to provide and apply basic first aid and respond to emergencies when necessary. 
  • Assist with the maintenance of a WorkSafe OH&S and Culturally safe workplace. 

Communications & Community

  • Build and maintain community relationships by developing community networks and relations. 
  • Promote the MLSU to relevant interested parties including media, schools, community, researchers, businesses, and government. 
  • Prepare for and attend community events and provide information about the MLSU.
  • Prepare for and attend schools and provide information about the MLSU.
  • Assist in educating relevant parties in Cultural protocol, tradition, safety, and protection of culturally significant places consistent with the Murujuga Cultural Management Plan. 

Tools & Equipment Used

  • 4WD vehicles, Commercial Boat, various hand and power tools, digital camera, desktop computers, tablets, IT Applications, iPhone, Printer/Photocopier, Projector.

Selection Criteria : In the context of the duties and responsibilities of the position, the following selection criteria will apply : 

Essential Criteria : 

  • Under Section 50D of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984, Aboriginality is a genuine requirement for this position with preference given to MAC language group members and culturally initiated or approved MAC applicants. 
  • Demonstrate a strong connection to Country and understand the cultural significance of Murujuga for the Traditional Owners. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team, show initiative and to work unsupervised. 
  • A Current Driver’s License (C Class Manual minimum).
  • Must be physically fit and able to perform ‘On Country’ work tasks. 
  • Must be willing to provide a current police clearance check, pass a drug and alcohol screen and pre-employment medical. 
  • Ability to obtain a working with children check. 
  • Public speaking experience and or ability to present to large groups and willingness to do so.
