ABOUT US
One of the leading arts and humanities faculties in Australia, Macquarie University's Faculty of Arts is home to bold thinkers and passionate educators who are asking the big questions about the world. The Faculty of Arts puts staff and students' engagement and success at the forefront of everything we do.
Macquarie University opened new museum facilities in 2021, combining both the Museum of Ancient Cultures and the Australian History Museum into one History Museum, to house and display both collections. The Museum of Ancient Cultures was the archaeological museum of Macquarie University holding a main collection of objects from cultures distributed largely around the Mediterranean Sea and the Near East as far as the Indus Valley; a small but significant papyrus collection; and a small coin and coin caste collection, primarily of ancient Greek and Roman numismatics. The Australian History Museum holds over 8,000 items reflecting Australia's history from before colonisation to today.
The Macquarie University History Museum brings together unique collections of artefacts from five continents over more than 5,000 years, enabling teachers, students, researchers and visitors to encounter many aspects of the human condition. The Museum provides facilities and services to:
  • foster collaborative research and publications with national and international partners
  • engage students through participatory learning experiences
  • enable access and exploration of collections through permanent and temporary exhibitions, publications, public events and educational programs
  • drive ethical museum policies and practices.
The History Museum is a showpiece of the Faculty of Arts' precinct and includes modern curatorial facilities and space for temporary as well as permanent/semi-permanent exhibitions.
Macquarie is a university engaged with the real and often complex problems and opportunities that define our lives. Since our foundation in 1964, we have aspired to be a different type of university. Over the years, we've grown to become the centre of a vibrant local and global community. .
