Job description

  • Growth opportunity for an experienced livestock-focused individual
  • Modern infrastructure and quality water supply
  • Experienced and professional family company
The Role
The continued development of our client's newest station acquisition provides the opportunity for an enthusiastic cattle-focused candidate to participate in an exciting, proposed expansion program. Encompassing 65,000 hectares on the Sturt Plateau south of Katherine, the station has cropping and livestock elements. As the successful candidate, you will be involved in all aspects of animal husbandry for the 5,000 Brahman breeders, with progeny transported to a sister station on the Mary River Floodplains for finishing. 2024 has also seen the addition of an onsite finishing trial, with rations being supplied by the cropping operation; if proven successful, the trial will be expanded in the coming years.

Plans are also afoot for the potential expansion of the cattle program with additional country and elements; as the Livestock Manager, you would be integral to its success. Currently, contractors are utilised for the mustering and processing of stock, which you will oversee; however, you will have the opportunity to build your own quality team over the coming seasons.

Under supportive mentorship from general management, this role is ideal for candidates who have experience in the Northern Pastoral industry and are looking to take the next step in their career; the experienced management team will continue to offer further progression. Always utilising low-stress stock handling techniques, you will be responsible for the monitoring of general animal welfare, feed, and water levels and be the key conduit between your managers and contractors when they are on-site for mustering and other significant tasks requiring you to have strong communication and organisational skills. Some basic reporting and record-keeping abilities will also be advantageous to your success in this role, which also provides opportunities for on-property partner employment.

The property is well watered with high-producing bores, accompanied by the recently installed modern infrastructure and well-maintained machinery fleet; you will find this an enjoyable work environment. All station staff are involved in the general maintenance of infrastructure and machinery, ensuring that fencing, machinery operation skills, and basic mechanical aptitude are valued characteristics. Although this role is livestock-focused, you will need to work in conjunction with the newly established irrigated cropping program, which is continuing to be developed on 1,000 Ha of the station, to ensure a seamless work program for all facets.

The Employer:
Our clients are an Australian family-owned and operated company with a heritage of over 80 years and three generations, and today, the company has a diverse portfolio ranging from pearling to retail and aviation. Now heavily involved in Australian agriculture, the company has a diverse portfolio of holdings spanning diverse climates and terrains and including several historically significant properties in New South Wales and the Northern Territory.

A variety of enterprises are farmed, including mixed cropping, wine grapes, prime lambs, cattle, merino wool, and the operation of one of the oldest Poll Hereford studs in Australia.  The business is characterised by high expectations of performance, optimising efficiencies while never compromising quality.  Respect for the environment and responsible management of precious natural resources are fundamental to their philosophy and farming practices.

The Offer
The successful candidate will be comfortably accommodated in an airconditioned three-bedroom, two-bathroom home on the station and will negotiate a quality salary package that will include all food and utilities.

The Ideal Candidate
Utilising your recent Northern Pastoral industry experience, you will be an enthusiastic stock-focused individual looking to take the next step in your career and possess the following attributes:

  • Quality low-stress stock handling skills and knowledge
  • General station skills
  • Water infrastructure knowledge
  • Strong communication, organisational and interpersonal skills
  • Basic reporting and record-keeping skills
