The Department of Environment, Parks and Water Security (DEPWS) was established with a clear vision that the Northern Territory's natural assets are managed sustainably for the benefit of all.
The George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens is situated two kilometres north of Darwin city covering 42 hectares and is renowned for their collections of Cycads, Palms and Baobabs and Boab species. The gardens includes top end native plants, waterfalls, ponds, Australian and international cycads, vibrant desert roses, the oldest church in the NT (now a buzzing café) and approximately 450 species of palms.
As the Nursery Supervisor, your primary objective is to manage the nursery and potted plant collection and provide significant input, technical advice and planning, into improving the Gardens current and new plant and seed collections.
Your key duties include; the propagation, cultivation, and maintenance of the nursery stock and specialised plant collections. You will also assist visitors and the local community with plant identification and tropical gardening advice, contribute to the grounds maintenance program and participate in delivering guided walks and talks for visitors, school groups and the local community.
To be successful, you require a relevant qualification in a field of horticulture awarded by an Australian institution or an equivalent level of technical experience. Demonstrated experience in plant management including extensive knowledge of propagation techniques, plant cultivation requirements and the use of horticulture equipment is essential. Applicants should note they will require the capacity to deliver the requirements of the position, at times, under challenging climatic conditions.
