Job description

Smillie Electrical is an electrical maintenance business operating predominantly within the Eastern/South-Eastern suburbs of Melbourne. Based in Dandenong South, we’re on the lookout for an Operations / General Manager to drive the business forward to new heights.


If you’re the person we’re looking for, you’ve been in the building and construction industry game for some time now, not necessarily in the electrical space, and your experience might be in domestic or commercial, but regardless of your exact experience you have a passion for the electrical industry and are looking for that next step in your career.


You could be in a GM position at present, perhaps even Head of Operations, but your frustrations might lie the ambition and drive you have for the business not being matched by the organisation you work for. Maybe the business lacks leadership or direction, or has become slightly stale in that it’s the same things month in month out that’s stagnated your learning. Or it may be that your just tied up in an organisation with too much red tape and the lack of execution isn’t allowing you to flourish.


This role will suit someone who wants to utilise their experience in a new environment and introduce fresh ideas and processes to improve business operations. 

The company has an entrepreneurial owner who is looking for a right-hand person to support him in taking this business to the next level.


To excel in this role, you’d need to be highly driven, self-motivated and have strong financial acumen. You pride yourself on attention to detail and have a proven background in being able to manage and lead a team of people to deliver high performance. You’ll be self- motivated, possess strong negotiation skills and be a supremely confident communicator.

Your role will involve:


· Strategy Execution – through supportive discussions with the owner, you’ll be
responsible for the implementation and execution of growth strategies to drive
revenue, new clients, increased profit and recruiting new team members.


· Leading and managing – a team of 10-15 (~5 office, ~10 field based)


· Operations – assisting in coordinating the planned works and liaising with our electricians and apprentices.


· Business development – bringing in new revenue streams for the business.


· Client management – maintain regular contact with clients, discuss upcoming works and strengthen relationships.


· Job analysis – review profitability of jobs, prepare monthly performance reports.


· Business improvement – work on various projects to improve the way we do things

About You:
· 5+ years experience in a similar role.
· Strong financial acumen and proven experience in understanding costings, margins and profit and loss management.


· Strong background in reporting – and able to provide an analytical approach to dissect reporting/performance outcomes, to understand what occurred, why it happened and demonstrate solutions to improve the outcome next time.


· Not afraid to get your hands dirty and can pivot quickly to adapt to the changing needs in a small business environment.
