CONSIDER A CAREER AS A CHILD & YOUTH WORKER

As a Child & Youth Worker, you will ensure children and young people in care have opportunities to experience education and participate in social, sporting and cultural activities.

You will be part of a team contributing to:

  • improving the social and living skills of children and young people in RESIDENTIAL CARE
  • assisting in the reunification/reconnection with their families, family-based care providers, or other suitable care options and ultimately, the effective transition into the community and/or assessing their individual needs
  • ensuring appropriate levels of their safety and supervision are maintained at all times.

In return, you will:

  • accrue up to 5 weeks annual leave p.a.
  • be paid to complete the nationally accredited qualification, Certificate IV in Child, Youth and Family Intervention
  • be allocated a mentor and undertake shadow shifts to build your confidence and develop your skills.

ABOUT YOU

To be a Child & Youth Worker, you will:

  • have relevant job or volunteer experience or transferrable skills from working with vulnerable people in a variety of disciplines (for example, child care, aged care, community service, SSO in schools, or disability support)
  • obtain a Working with Children Check from the Department of Human Services prior to being offered work
  • hold a current HLTAID012 – Provide Emergency First Aid in an Education Care Setting unit of competency, or be willing to obtain one prior to an offer of employment
  • hold a current Australian driver’s licence (P2 or above) and be willing to regularly drive children and young people.

You must be willing to:

  • undergo a telephone interview, medical and psychological assessments
  • undertake an 8-week, full-time induction program
  • complete the CHC40321 Certificate IV in Child, Youth and Family Intervention qualification within the first 12 months of your employment
  • work shifts which includes nights, weekends and public holidays.

Visa requirements

We welcome applications from anyone who holds a valid Australian working visa with a minimum of 2 years’ full working rights from the time of joining the Employment Pool. Applicants holding a Student Visa (subclass 500) can only be employed if they are not subjected to the work restriction of 48 hours per fortnight effective from 1 July 2023.

About our recruitment process:

We recruit for Child & Youth Workers throughout the year and those who are successful are placed into an Employment Pool for 12 months. This is not an offer of employment, but allows us to offer you a job when a vacancy becomes available.

This is an ongoing rolling advertisement and you can apply at any time. We generally have four intakes per year and your application will be considered for the next available recruitment round.

As jobs become available, we select candidates from our Employment Pool. Those offered a job will be required to undertake an8-week, full-time induction program.

If you have selected to work only on the night shift roster, you will still be required to undertake the same selection process as those working a 24/7 shift roster and complete the required 8-week induction program.

What else do you need to know?

Our RESIDENTIAL CARE properties do not close. The children and young people in our care require your attention and supervision at all times. 

Shifts rotate and include AM, PM and active night shifts, with varying start andfinish times. You will be required to work across all three shifts (unless you have selected night shift only). Shift work also includes weekends and public holidays so you are encouraged to consider this aspect of the role and whether it suits your circumstances.
