In our vital 'First 48 hours,' we swiftly respond to the needs of women and children, offering personalised support and safety planning. About the Walking Together Program

The Walking Together program embodies a family-centric, trauma-informed approach, focusing on reducing and preventing violence while strengthening intimate partner and family relationships. We provide individual and family support for individuals aged 13 to 24, working within Domestic, Family & Sexual Violence Frameworks and with relevant stakeholder. Our program ensures youth are central to the process, empowering them to be well informed and self-determined at every decision-making juncture.

About the Opportunity

Discover an exciting opportunity with Katherine Women's Crisis Centre for a full-time female Outreach Worker position, based in the heart of Katherine, NT.

As our Walking Together Outreach Worker, you will be a beacon of change in the lives of youth aged 13 to 24 experiencing/witnessing/using violence and other Crises. You will support them through the challenges they face by putting them in touch with and facilitating conversations with external resources that they need, as well as providing appropriate social and emotional support. Due to the inherent nature of the Support/Case Worker duties it is necessary that the position be filled by a female.

You will be their support person, attending meetings and appointments with them, and help them feel empowered to be self-determined, and encourage them to participate positively in our community.

Your responsibilities with us include (but are not limited to):

  • Carry out Domestic Family Violence Risk assessments
  • Attend supports with clients, typically aged 13–24 years old
  • You will provide referrals to young people and help connect them to a range of support services
  • Collaborate with community, town camps, and service providers to enhance responses to domestic violence
  • Attend Stakeholder meetings
  • Prepare case notes

You play a pivotal role in the lives of the women, children, and families we assist as their primary advocate. Your advocacy guides them through difficult changes, empowering them to discover their own voices, enabling them to speak up for themselves.

At Katherine Women’s Crisis Centre, our mission is centered on tackling challenges uniquely impacting women. The nature of your role will be crucial in bolstering the strength and legal autonomy of women and girls. This gender-specific requirement is in harmony with the exceptions outlined in the Australian Sex Discrimination Act. Under this Act, gender can be a legitimate occupational qualification, particularly for roles focused on the empowerment and support of a specific gender (Sections 30 to 43). Furthermore, this role conforms to the Act's clauses for 'special measures,' which advocate for proactive steps in favour of women in employment and job advertisements as part of recognised affirmative action programs.

More About You

To qualify, you will have, or are working towards a Cert III in Community Service, with previous experience in Case Management, more specifically an understanding of duty of care and DFSV issues.

You will be empathetic to youth, women, and children experiencing family violence, and you bring forth a friendly, kind, and welcoming vibe to how we connect with clients, coworkers, and stakeholders.

To be successful in this role, you will:

  • Demonstrate proficiency in both written and verbal communication
  • Act with integrity, and create a warm and friendly atmosphere for everyone to be around
  • Have basic computer skills
  • Work productively with others
  • Respect and adhere to the confidentiality of cases
  • Operate within established policies, procedures, guidelines, and boundaries

Due to the nature of the cases, you will have a solid understanding of Indigenous culture and have a keen eye to spot when additional training is needed amongst the team and community.
