The Royal Australian Mint is a prescribed Agency within the Commonwealth Government portfolio of the Treasury. The Mint is the sole supplier of Australia’s circulating coinage and produces a range of high quality collector coins for national and international markets. In addition, the Mint is a popular Canberra tourist attraction with a public gallery and shop.

The opportunity

The Mint offers a unique opportunity to work in a dynamic manufacturing environment within a government setting. We are seeking a talented packaging development engineer or technician to support a range of technical packaging development work in the Mint.

The successful applicant will be able to apply their engineering skills to real-world applications and contribute to tangible outcomes in the Mint’s production environment. Through the development and improvement of product packaging, your work will directly contribute to the delivery of innovative and sustainable products to the Mint’s customers.

About EOL (Engineering, Operations and Logistics Branch)

The Engineering, Operations, and Logistics Branch of the Royal Australian Mint is an operationally focused, multi-disciplinary team responsible for the provision of organisation-wide engineering services, manufacture of Australian and selected international circulating coin, and the supply of tooling to meet the Royal Australian Mint’s manufacturing demands.

Engineering Section

The Engineering Section is responsible for the integrated and proactive provision of engineering and technical service to the Royal Australian Mint. The Section is responsible for the achievement of organisational objectives through:

  • Customer engagement
  • Application of engineering principles and methods
  • Compliance with safety, quality, and risk standards
  • Application of technology
  • Research and development
  • Design of new equipment, processes, tools, and products
  • Continuous improvement and innovation programs
  • Supporting manufacturing activities
Products and Process Engineering Team

The Products and Process engineering team supports the production of both circulating and numismatic (collector) coins, medals, tokens and ingots by ensuring all products, packaging and associated production processes are fully developed and will produce the desired outcomes in production.

The Products and Process team is split into two sub-teams with the Products team focussing on the development and implementation of product and packaging capabilities.

Under limited direction, the role will:

  • Design, develop, test and implement innovative and sustainable product presentation, storage and shipping solutions that meets customer and business requirements
  • Provide technical expertise and leadership throughout the entire packaging development process and lifecycle, including from concept design, prototype development, performance testing and planning for end of life
  • Develop new packaging materials and solutions using Design for Manufacture and Assembly principles with a focus on sustainability, durability and the reduction of waste throughout the supply chain
  • Work closely with internal marketing teams to link identified commercial market opportunities to technical requirements and specifications, and provide timely feedback on manufacturing capacity and capability
  • Design packaging components and assemblies, producing drawings for manufacture using 3D CAD software
  • Create, review and assess specifications and technical drawings using applicable industry, and international standards and best practices
  • Design, develop, and conduct tests that validate packaging designs
  • Establish processes, standards, and guidelines for packaging and supplier evaluation
  • Assist with evaluation and selection of packaging suppliers
  • Perform root cause analysis to resolve recurring packaging issues that impact quality, cost, efficiency and sustainability
  • Work closely with stakeholders and customers from various backgrounds and technical abilities to ensure that all packaging meets stakeholder and customer expectations
  • Apply Project Management principles to plan and manage projects with limited guidance
  • Present information in a variety of formats including presentations, technical reports, and meetings

Technical skills and experience

  • Five years of experience in a packaging development role
  • Experience in stakeholder management working with technical and non-technical staff
  • Demonstrated technical problem solving abilities through design, experimentation, and analysis
  • Experience in design and development processes, including 3D CAD software
  • Experience in managing and delivering projects
  • Knowledge of manufacturing methods, technologies, and principles
  • (Desirable) Experience working in a manufacturing environment
  • (Desirable) Knowledge of packaging materials and technologies including plastic injection moulding and print packaging
  • (Desirable) Knowledge of sustainable design practices

 Qualifications

  • (Highly Desirable) Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Industrial Design or Applied Sciences
  • (Highly Desirable) Certificate in Packaging (Level 3) or other relevant packaging qualifications
  • (Desirable) Project Management qualification

The Mint offers a competitive salary plus generous leave provisions, with employer superannuation contributions of 15.4%.

Competitive salaries are negotiable, based on the level of skills and relevant experience of the successful applicant. There is some ability to make additional adjustments to remuneration for exemplary applicants.

A relocation package may be available for successful applicants who are required to move to the ACT region before commencement.
