Pathology Collectors in the department are responsible for collection of specimens and taking ECG with future opportunities to attend to advanced skills in the area of intravenous cannulation. Shifts are varied and include collections of blood from patients in the inpatient setting. The department sees up to 200 patients a day, with a combined workforce of Registered Nurses and Pathology Collectors.To be successful in this role you will be able to demonstrate:
- Certificate III in Pathology Collection
- 12 Months experience with blood collection- Ability to work independently in a fast paced environment

- Able to perform intravenous cannulation or willing to work towards

- A basic knowledge of medical terminology.

1. Pathology Collection Practices • Demonstrate expertise in pathology collection to ensure the provision of quality of care to all patients
- Adhere to patient identification policy and process.
- Collection of specimens from the right patient and the right specimen type at all times, adhering the patient identification policy and process.
- Advise Associate Nurse Unit Manager or Registered Nurse In Charge of any adverse episodes whilst in the performance of duties.
- Practice with direct or indirect supervision of the Registered Nurse in a complementary and collaborative role providing high quality care.
- Demonstrate professional accountability related to work practice.
- Apply assessment skills which are context specific and relevant to care of the oncology patient within scope of practise.
- Recognise and respond to patient's individual needs in a professional manner.
- Evidence of accurate and complete documentation that adheres to hospital pathology procedures.
- Work as a member of a multidisciplinary team and contribute to the effective communication with other pathology collection team members to provide the best care for patients

- Participate in quality improvement activities and ensure outcomes from quality improvement processes are incorporated into practice.
