Roses in the Ocean is a national not for profit organisation founded on and operating through the lens of lived experience of suicide; we exist to save lives and reduce emotional distress and pain.

We seek to lead the significant cultural shift needed to save lives through harnessing the perspectives of all we represent, along with our own lived experience of suicide. With our actions driven and guided by those with a lived experience of suicide, we innovate and transform suicide prevention, and drive and deliver system reform. We support organisations and government to effectively and meaningfully integrate lived experience expertise into suicide prevention.

Everyone who works within Roses in the Ocean has a lived experience of suicide which is defined as ‘having experienced suicidal thoughts, survived a suicide attempt, cared for someone through suicidal crisis, or been bereaved by suicide.’

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Head of Peer CARE Companion Services, the Peer CARE Companion Shift Supervisors are responsible for providing real-time peer support guidance, debriefing, and a point of escalation for volunteer Peer CARE Companions providing support across a range of services delivered by Roses in the Ocean. 

This role provides remote support to volunteer Peer CARE Companions via phone and instant messaging technology as needed, supporting with decision making when supporting a person who may be requiring additional support when experiencing increased levels of distress or suicidal thoughts and behaviours.

It is envisaged that on-call shifts will be available on a weekly basis as follows:

  • 9am – 9pm Monday to Friday (12 hours)
  • 9am – 4pm Saturday (7 hours)

Role Responsibilities

  • Provide immediate on-call support to volunteer Peer CARE Companions providing support to people accessing Roses in the Ocean Non-Clinical Peer Led services.
  • Provide real-time debriefing and emotional peer support during or following a challenging support session.
  • Allocation of Warmline calls on Saturday and Public Holiday shifts.
  • Support volunteer Peer CARE Companions to make decisions around occasions where contact with emergency services may be appropriate in supporting a person experiencing suicidal distress. 
  • Support volunteer Peer CARE Companions to make decisions and complete necessary reporting requirements where there is a disclosure around child protection concerns.
  • Support volunteer Peer CARE Companions to complete internal incident reporting in Volaby. 
  • Identify when volunteer Peer CARE Companions may require additional support beyond the debriefing support interactions (concerns around practice or wellbeing) including providing a handover report to the relevant members of the Roses in the Ocean leadership team.
  • Completion of appropriate daily records including handover reports and updates in Volaby before the end of each shift.
  • Ensure support provided aligns with Roses in the Ocean volunteer Peer CARE Companion training, service model and Operational Guidelines.

About You

Skills and Experience

  • A lived experience of suicide and an understanding of the impact it has on families, workplaces, friends and communities.
  • Personal values that align with those of Roses in the Ocean and the Lived Experience Guiding Principles.
  • Previous experience in working on a warmline or crisis line. 
  • Demonstrated supervision or mentoring experience of volunteers / peer workers. 
  • Evidence of well-developed skills, competency and independent decision making in crisis support roles.
  • A clear understanding of reflective practice and debriefing techniques. 
  • High-level written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate and liaise effectively and sensitively at all levels.
  • Demonstrated capacity to maintain confidentiality and professional standards of behaviour in difficult and sensitive circumstances.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain strong relationships with volunteers, colleagues and stakeholders at all levels.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Office 365 and SharePoint. 
  • Volaby and Monday.com (desirable, however training will be provided). 
  • Relevant ABN and insurances to operate as a contractor.
