Primary Responsibilities, Duties, and Accountabilities:
  • Utilise personal lived experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities to engage with clients, establishing respectful and professional relationships while maintaining clear worker/consumer boundaries.
  • Provide support through various means, including outreach and centre-based activities, and actively seek to understand client's interests, connections with family and friends, and assist in building their capacity to be part of the community.
  • Offer emotional support by sharing constructive lessons from personal experiences, serving as a source of hope for recovery.
  • Apply a strength-based, recovery-oriented approach in working with clients and facilitate discussions on problem-solving strategies, reflecting on both helpful and unhelpful behaviours.
  • Provide social validation support by offering constructive feedback on clients social interactions.
  • Collaborate as part of a team to assist consumers in engaging with the Mental Health & Wellbeing Service Model, involving collaborative support and care planning.
  • Participate fully as a team member by cooperating closely with a multi-disciplinary team, engaging in reflective practice, and actively contributing to team huddles, decision-making processes, service planning sessions, supervision, and staff development activities.
  • Engage with the supervisor in probation assessments, bi-annual performance reviews, regular supervision, and training and development plans.
  • Contribute to the development of best practices by informing policies and project submissions based on personal experiences of mental illness.
  • Contribute to regular evaluations of service effectiveness in consultation with consumers and carers.
Organisational Accountabilities:
  • Adhere to the National Code of Ethics and policies, including privacy, confidentiality, and records management.
  • Follow safe work practices, comply with the National Occupational Health and Safety management processes, and report and manage risks in accordance with the organisations policies.
  • Proactively work towards achieving individual and team goals while demonstrating core competencies and values.
  • Actively engage in professional development opportunities and embrace learning opportunities.
  • Promote and contribute to quality improvement processes within the assigned responsibilities and across the organisation.
  • Commitment to promoting a diverse and inclusive environment for all staff, consumers, and carers.
  • Undertake any reasonable tasks as directed in addition to the position description accountabilities.
  • Record management: Ensure compliance with policies and procedures for records management, including the accurate and up-to-date retention of hardcopy and/or electronic records.
About you:
  • Lived experience of mental illness, mental health crisis or caring for someone living with a mental illness and demonstrated experience of recovery.
  • Experience of the public or private mental health system
  • Computer literacy
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrates an interest and understanding of others and ability to relate to people at all levels.
  • Proven ability to maintain confidentiality and build trust to deal with sensitive and difficult situations in a diplomatic manner.
  • Ability to establish respectful professional relationships that have clear boundaries with consumers, staff and partner organisations.
  • Mental Health Qualification: It is a requirement of the Peer Support Worker position that you hold, and provide evidence of, a Mental Health (or equivalent Human Services, Community Services) qualification of Certificate IV level or above, or complete such a qualification within 2 years of your commencement of employment.
  • All staff are required to adhere to the organisations immunisation and vaccination policy directives to minimise the risk of vaccine preventable diseases to protect workers, other employees, consumers, and visitors.
  • A valid and current Australian Driver License and access to personal vehicle
  • A valid and current Working with Children Check
  • A valid and current Police Check
