About the project

Alcohol is a major modifiable risk factor for female breast cancer; yet, awareness of this risk remains surprisingly low, and is not systematically addressed in healthcare settings. The Health4Her project, a collaboration between Turning Point, Monash University, Eastern Health, BreastScreen Victoria, VicHealth, Lifepool, and Shades of Pink, is a world-first initiative targeting low awareness of the link between alcohol and breast cancer among women participating in population-based breast screening programs.

A PhD scholarship is being offered to conduct research as part of the Health4Her Project, supporting the implementation-effectiveness trials, as well as the opportunity to gather data and explore a range of issues around women’s health and alcohol consumption, including alcohol literacy, attitudes, social practices, health promotion, and behaviour change.

The project may include qualitative and quantitative research methods, the utilisation of implementation research frameworks, and consumer and stakeholder participation approaches.

Turning Point and Monash University

The successful candidate will be part of a multidisciplinary cohort of researchers and students based at Turning Point, Australia’s leading national addiction treatment, training and research centre, based in Melbourne, Australia. For more information about the important work that Turning Point does, please visit the website.

Turning Point is affiliated with Eastern Health Clinical School, within the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences (MNHS) at Monash University, and undertakes close collaborative work with the Monash Addiction Research Centre (MARC).

Supervisory team

The principal supervisor will be Dr Jasmin Grigg.

Dr Grigg is a Research Fellow in Addiction Studies at Monash University and Turning Point. Her research uses hybrid implementation-effectiveness methods to develop novel public health interventions to reduce alcohol consumption and related harms, and raise population awareness about the low levels of drinking that cause harm.
