Job description

The purpose of this role is to supervise and co-ordinate the Specimen Collection Service in the Queensland Children’s Hospital Laboratory. Reporting to the Operational Manager, you will assist with the development, implementation and review of systems, policies and procedures to support effective and efficient Specimen Collection service delivery.

You will ensure that all relevant phlebotomy practices comply with Pathology Queensland requirements in providing an effective and efficient Specimen Collection Service.

You will be assessed on your ability to demonstrate the following key capabilities, knowledge and experience. Within the context of the responsibilities described above under ‘your key responsibilities', the ideal applicant will be someone who can demonstrate the following:

  • Demonstrated competence and thorough working knowledge in all aspects of specimen collection.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and co-ordinate a specimen collection service while ensuring the maintenance of professional clinical standards, and established principles / procedures in line with the Department of Health Strategic Plan.
  • Demonstrated leadership, initiative, highly developed communication skills, and a commitment to personal and organisational excellence.
  • Demonstrated competence and thorough working knowledge in all aspects of specimen collection.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and co-ordinate a specimen collection service while ensuring the maintenance of professional clinical standards, and established principles / procedures in line with the Department of Health Strategic Plan.

Qualifications, registrations and other requirements

  • Mandatory Qualifications – Nil.
  • While not mandatory, a Certificate in Certificate in Pathology (Specimen Collection), Pathology (Laboratory Assistance) or equivalent would be well regarded.
  • Paediatric collection experience is not mandatory, however will be well regarded.
  • This position will be required to work weekends, early starts, and late finishes per a rotational roster.
Vaccine Preventable Diseases (VPD) requirements
  • It will be a condition of employment for this role for the employee to be, and remain, vaccinated against one or more of the following vaccine preventable diseases during their employment: Hepatitis A & B, Measles, Mumps, Pertussis, Rubella and Varicella.
  • Additional vaccinations including Japanese Encephalitis and Rabies may also be required for this position.
  • Existing staff that are engaged prior to 1 July 2016 are not subject to this condition of employment unless they apply for a role with VPD requirements that is with a different Queensland Health entity (i.e. one HHS to another HHS, department to a HHS, or HHS to department).
